Shanoff's WUC: Fearless Predictions for 2010

Today's Calls: 2009 vs. 2010, Tiger vs. Revenge, Colts vs. Saints, Jets vs. Wild Card, Eagles vs. Cowboys, Tim Tebow vs. Bobby Bowden, New Year's Day vs. New Year's Eve, John Wall vs. Anyone, LeBron vs. D-Wade, Fenway vs. Rain and More. ↵

↵The Opening Pitch: New year, new decade. ↵

↵

↵As I have been saying, predicting the next decade in sports is ludicrous. (To instantly recognize why, go back to what you knew in December '99 and then consider the biggest stars/moments of the Aughts.) But making a few predictions for 2010? Ha: No problem! ↵

↵

↵Let's start with this: Tiger Woods will not just come back to golf, but he will win at least two majors. The new meme -- the one sports media has been dying to use -- will be "Tiger's back!" His marriage scandal will be forgotten by the U.S. Open. ↵

↵

↵• Will the Colts and Saints make the Super Bowl?
↵• Which uniform will LeBron be wearing in October 2010? ↵
↵• Why will Halladay ultimately make no difference in Philly? ↵
↵• Why is the 2010 college football season good news/bad news for BCS-haters? ↵
↵• Where will Tim Tebow get drafted (and by whom)? ↵
↵• Why John Wall is more like Derrick Rose than Carmelo? ↵
↵• And, of course, will Brett Favre be back for 2010? ↵

↵

↵For lock-solid answers, keep reading. ↵

↵

↵NFL Week 17: Two games matter: Bengals at Jets and Ravens at Raiders. They can -- and will -- make the other games involving 8-7 AFC Wild Card teams moot. To fans of playoff teams, good luck. To fans of non-playoff teams, see you at the Draft. (Tunison has a good analysis of Week 17's best: Eagles -- gunning for a first-round bye -- at Cowboys is big.) ↵

↵

↵Fearless prediction for 2010? Neither the Colts nor the Saints will make the Super Bowl; Brett Favre will play another season in the NFL. (Ugh.) ↵

↵

↵Gone Bowlin': New Year's Day buffet! Half the bowl schedule -- 17 games -- is played between tonight and Saturday. Here are the top five story lines to watch: ↵

↵

↵1. Tim Tebow’s college finale (see below) ↵
↵2. Bobby Bowden career finale ↵
↵3. Jeremiah Masoli > Terrelle Pryor ↵
↵4. Bask in the glory of Ndamukong Suh ↵
↵5. New Year's Eve studs: Gerhart! Keenum! ↵

↵

↵Fearless prediction for 2010? Boise State over Ohio State in the national title game. Kellen Moore wins the Heisman. (One-loss Florida wins the SEC title and lobbies unsuccessfully for AP national title, because the AP pollsters are giddy over Boise.) ↵

↵

↵Tebow's college career ends: With a Sugar Bowl blowout win. It doesn't erase the memory of the SEC championship game, but it sends Tebow out a winner. ↵

↵

↵Fearless prediction for 2010? Tebow will eclipse Peyton Manning as the NFL’s endorsement leader and WILL be selected in the top half of the 2010 NFL draft, but NOT by Jacksonville. ↵

↵

↵Mike Leach/Texas Tech fight: This isn't a particularly bold prediction for 2010 -- Leach will not be the coach at Texas Tech. Let's see if he makes it to tomorrow night. Given he's due an $800K kicker if he does, it's not looking likely. ↵

↵

↵BCS Mess: The most surprising thing about that new poll is that the number of people dissatisfied with the system is only 63 percent. Thought it would be higher. (Guess how much that matters to the BCS, by the way? Zero percent.) ↵

↵

↵Fearless prediction for 2010: People will continue to gripe, but the BCS won't change. (See my prediction above: Ironically, a Boise State national title would undercut the folks who want to dismantle the BCS system.) ↵

↵

↵CBB Mania: Purdue-West Virginia is your Game of the Weekend, and one to file away for your bracket-picking in March, right up there with Kentucky-UNC and Texas-UNC (and maybe Syracuse-UNC). ↵

↵

↵Fearless prediction for 2010? Electrifying point guard leads a John Calipari-coached team all the way to the national title game ... only to lose to Kansas. (Wait: Is this 2008 or 2010?) John Wall is named National Player of the Year. (Better be!) ↵

↵

↵NBA Talking Points: 2010! 2010! 2010! We've only been talking about the NBA's "Summer of 2010" since, oh, the summer of 2006. It's like the rest of the 2009 season is in the way. ↵

↵

↵Fearless prediction for 2010? After NOT winning the 2009 title, LeBron James will join Dwyane Wade in Miami. Chris Bosh will go to the Knicks. The T-wolves will win the John Wall Lottery, and all of us will laugh. ↵

↵

↵MLB Hot Stove: Jason Bay signs with the Mets. I mean, it's something. (Let's call it better than Mark DeRosa.) ↵

↵

↵Fearless prediction for 2010? It won't help, and the Phillies -- led by 2010 NL Cy Young winner Roy Halladay -- will win another NL pennant (only to lose to the Yankees in the 2010 World Series). ↵

↵

↵NFL Pro Bowlers: Yes, yes, Favre. Brees, Peyton, Peterson, Chris Johnson -- all obvious. No Chad Ochocinco or any Bengals? Boo! And though 8 Vikings made it, presumptive offensive rookie of the year Percy Harvin wasn't one of them. ↵

↵

↵Fearless prediction for 2010? Ndamukong Suh and Eric Berry will make the Pro Bowl next year as rookies. ↵

↵

↵NHL: New Year's Day at Fenway! The annual New Year's Day outdoor game is the single best league marketing idea of the decade, assuring the NHL that casual fans will -- at the very least -- tune in once per year. (Rain?!? Nooooo!) ↵

↵

↵Fearless prediction for 2010? The NCAA will announce an expansion of the Tournament from 64 to 96 teams, starting in 2011, and we instantly will have the single best league marketing idea of the next decade. ↵
