The Kids' Table Is Set: TCU/Boise State

The BCS safely insulates itself from any possible embarrassments by putting TCU and Boise State at the Fiesta Bowl against each other. I mean, “The Fiesta Bowl chooses both teams because they believe they will be the best draw for attendance and ratings.” Yes, that’s it!

but they, and their conferences

are getting some sweet cash, I would rather see these two get that money rather than give more to the Big Ten or the ACC.
The money is the worst aspect of the BCS system

True

But Boise only gets $4.5 mil for being second non-BCS. Saying TV ratings is the reason is a joke having Iowa vs. Boise would bring HUGE ratings since the Big 10 has such a large alumni base and familiarity.

And, damn it, that was going to be our job.

Before you respond, let me remind you: Brian Cook called me smug, which makes me the Obama of smugness. I'm basically Smugbama.

Fiesta Bowl's Matchup Self-serving and Insulting

The Horned Frogs’ record-setting season and continuing bowl streak…and finally participating in a January bowl…has made me and every other TCU alumnus (past and present) very proud. While I enjoyed Mobile and the Mobile/GMAC Bowl, Houston and the Houston/Texas Bowl and San Diego and the Poinsettia Bowl, this is more like it.

The Fiesta Bowl selection people have scored a major PR coup, drawing a lot of attention to their 2010 matchup. That matchup, however, sucks. It proves nothing, stunts the growth of two rising programs and is disrespectful to both institutions and anyone remotely affiliated with them. From the pompous perspective of the BCS, they have successfully hidden off in the corner the two teams who shouldn’t really be contaminating the championship field, anyway. In one fell swoop, they have eliminated both possibilities of national embarrassment for BCS conferences. Bravo!

The 2010 Fiesta Bowl has attracted significant publicity. They will make good money from the game. Both of these are higher priorities than strengthening the integrity of the institution on whose back they ride and from whose fans they make that money. That is their job and the capitalistic society in which we live. But I’m not buying the b.s. about this being a good matchup. Yes, it could be a pretty good game, but pairing two non-BCS schools smells like a protectionist, cover-your-ass, back room deal sponsored by the BCS. I have no concrete evidence, but it doesn’t take a wild imagination to come to this conclusion.

ESPN commentator, Mark May, a man for whom I (used to) have a great deal of respect is not shy in his role as a BCS apologist. “I love the matchup; two undefeateds going head-to-head, two non-AQ schools going head-to-head…” But, as Lou Holtz, a man for whom I have increased respect, pointed out, “…it doesn’t prove anything.”

After Holtz called him out, May whined with the logic of a third grader, “But it proves one’s better than the other.”

It also proves that the BCS learned its lesson from matching Boise State vs. OU and Utah vs. Alabama. It proves that the BCS doesn’t want to risk having two teams from non-BCS conferences beating two teams from BCS conferences in one BCS season, which would be quite possible had TCU and Boise State been given a shot at, say, Georgia Tech and Iowa. The BCS missed a marvelous chance to prove their case. Hmmm, maybe they’re not telling us everything they know.

And, Hawkeye State, just have your AD talk to my AD and let’s set up a home-and-home sometime soon – since the BCS is too chicken@#&* to put us in the same bowl.

The Fiesta Bowl says they wanted to attract more fans to the game. They say they wanted to increase the game’s viewership. (TCU vs. Iowa would have given you more fans and viewers than the current matchup.) To the casual fan, they have created a game that equates to the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. I guess they wanted a killer new subtitle for this game…the Fiesta Bowl, Poinsettia Bowl II.
