BCS Evolution: Gut Reactions, And Why Fiesta Bowl Isn't All Bad

Our resident BCS experts have their instant reaction to the BCS bowls (they’ll have more in-depth previews of each game in the coming days), which includes a different perspective on the Boise State-TCU match-up:

For the first time in BCS history two teams from at large conferences will participate in a BCS bowl in the same year. Pairing these teams against each other will raise questions about whether this was a ploy to produce an easily dismissible game.

Some will say that one benefit of a BCS bowl for at large teams is the ability to face off against one of the top teams from one of the top conferences to prove their worth to the nation.

I would argue that TCU and Boise State have already proven to the nation that they each are comparable to any other team they could have played and they each have an opportunity to play one of the top-of-the-class teams from 2009.

I guess. But the David vs. Goliath BCS games in past years have been some of the best bowls in recent memory (Boise St. over Oklahoma; Utah over Alabama). Having said that, the Fiesta is still a much more intriguing game than Georgia Tech-Iowa and Oregon-Ohio State.

How good is really Tim Tebow?

I watched the saturday game between Florida and alabama and got the best proof how college football really needs play-offs. I would like to see Tim Tebows defense facing Toni Pike Austin Petttis whole gang from TCU and some other teams that proven themselves this year. This last game for SEC championship showed all the weaknesses of Florida and TIm Tebow and should be a study guide for any other team they will face next year. I think the best proof and most legitimate one that college football needs play-offs will come when Toni Pike and Bearcats beat Florida in Sugar Bowl…

TCU-Boise State Fiesta is legitimate

For those who complain about this matchup:

There is a site that notes how a 32-team playoff can be realistically be done in college football, using the existing BCS Bowl games as quarterfinals/regional finals, which can be found at:

http://www.toosmarttofail.com/32teamplayoff.html

In the example noted, if there really were a playoff, TCU would have been a #1 seed and Boise State a #2 seed in the Rose Bowl region, meaning if TCU and Boise State won their first and second round games (which would be at home), they would have been playing each other in the Rose Bowl.

Further, if BYU had not lost to Florida State early this season, with only a loss to TCU, they may very well have been a THIRD “BCS Buster” and the first non-BCS conference champ and non-BCS unbeaten to make a BCS bowl game, so that also legitimizes this matchup.
