Why Andy Pettitte Is Worth Another Year

Another baseball off-season, and another Andy Pettitte contract. If you wonder how a 37-year old pitcher can continue to earn nearly $12 million contracts, Beyond the Box Score has the answer, and it is pretty simple: he's worth it.

Even at his advanced age of 37, Pettitte is still an above average starter. It seems that he could wake up out of bed and hand you a 3.5-4 WAR season without much effort. Over the last eight seasons, his average WAR has been 4.14. If you remove the injury shortened season of 2004, he has earned a 4.46 WAR over the past seven season in which he has thrown at least 130 innings. [...]

With his track record of giving nearly 200 innings per season plus an above average FIP/xFIP, it should be pretty easy for the Yankees to get value once again from Pettitte.

Somewhat amazingly, Pettitte has earned over $93 million since 2002. But it's tough to argue he hasn't been worth it.

Andy Pettitte Decides He Could Use Another $12 Million, Signs One-Year Deal With Yankees

Andy Pettitte is getting a 100% raise from his employer for his 4.16 ERA-season last year. According to NY Daily News, the 37-year-old pitcher has agreed to a one-year, $11.75 million deal with the Yankees, which is twice what he made in '09.

More from Daily News:

The deal came together quickly once Pettitte informed the Yankees that he wanted to pitch in 2010. Brian Cashman spoke with agent Randy Hendricks more than once on Tuesday, then completed the deal on Wednesday morning. [...]

Pettitte, who won the clincher in all three rounds of the postseason, will slot in behind CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett, though the Yankees are still in the mix in the Roy Halladay trade sweepstakes. The Yankees have Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes tabbed to start in 2010, though either could be traded or moved back to the bullpen.

Is that legal? A rotation of Halladay, Sabathia, Burnett and Pettitte? I think my local congressman needs to be made aware of this. While I'm contacting him, feel free to visit SBN's Yankees blog, Pinstripe Alley, where they'll be celebrating their annual bounty of top-notch roster additions.
