Lacking the evidence he needs to convict pot-smoker Michael Phelps, Richland, S.C. Sheriff Leon Lott has decided to stop building a case against the Olympian:
"Michael Phelps is truly an American hero ... but even with his star status, he is still obligated to obey the laws of our state," Lott said. ...You know who’s the real American hero here? You, Leon Lott. Sure, there are pages of unsolved homicides in your county, not to mention countless other violent criminals to track down, but to you, Leon, a crime’s a crime. There is no such thing as wasted resources on your watch. We salute your ability to put on blinders and understand that. Our only regret is that Phelps never fully admitted to smoking marijuana, which means he’s just one more drug-crazed madman roaming the streets. Lord knows you did your part though, Leon.
"We had a photo and him saying he was sorry for inappropriate behavior. He never said, 'I smoked marijuana.' We didn't have physical evidence," Lott said.
Oh well, back to breaking up frat parties and busting kids for underage drinking. It must be nice to have such a rewarding job.
