Sporting News' Albert Breer has comment from Jerry Jones on why he instituted a gag order on his coaches and staff, further weakening the image of cuckolded head coach Wade Phillips. Jones claims some leaky Cowboy has spread misinformation about the team's state, necessitating the muzzle.
In particular, he was angry over two recent reports. First, he denied ever having players over to his home to discuss Terrell Owens' future with the team. Second, he refuted the report that he and his son, chief operating officer Stephen Jones, were debating the subject and that the son was trying convince his father to cut Owens. "As I said the other day, that example that I had players over the house talking about personnel, that just is misinformation," Jerry Jones said. "That Stephen and I were debating about Terrell, that's just misinformation. That's just not accurate. I don't know where that comes from. That's just total misinformation."If it's misinformation, how is a gag order going to help? If someone is spreading lies about the debate over Owens as a way to keep the heat on management to get T.O. out (somehow, someway), then set the record straight. I mean, is Wade Phillips really calling up the beat writers and making up stuff? He doesn't strike me as a usurper of Jones' monarchy. Shouldn't Jerry just tell his employees to not lie, if this is all in fact misinformation?

Seriously. Do people normally call a press conference to leak information? A gag order is only going to make Jerry Jones look nuttier than he already looks.
