Signing Day: The only day of the year where there are almost as many men stalking high school boys as there are men stalking high school girls on the internet. If you have a life, you'll need this explained to you. Today is the day when college football recruits sign their Letters of Intent with certain schools, thus ending the years of pursuit by coaches, overly zealous alums, and occasionally the governors of states in order to convince you, the talented recruit, to attend their university and play football for them.
Recruits have made theater of this as the internet has turned recruiting from a niche market into a full-time business. Sometimes they stage press conferences where they muddle between different schools' ballcaps. Sometimes they get three minutes on ESPNU to discuss their choice and announce it on air. And if they really have style, they announce their intentions at a club with a 25 cent shooter night, as linebacker recruit Sam Barrington did on Tuesday night in choosing the venue to announce his choice of USF over Miami.
Instead of the high school gymnasium or local television station, Barrington chose Eclipse Nightclub, home of “Dirty Dirty Mondays with 25 cent shooters!”Sam Barrington is the first recruit we can remember to announce his signing at da club, and will surely not be the last. College Football Talk wisecracks that Miami thought Barrington was in the bag due to the blingy venue choice, but let's be clear: a Miami recruit going biggie big style would opt for the sort of club where the employees wear variable amounts of clothing through the evening, not just a mere nightclub. And having typed that, the odds of this happening in the next ten hours are now at 3/1. You're welcome, universe.

Hilarious. Before I realized it, I found myself sucked into the hype. Many thanks for the perspective.
