MD, I noticed you've had DE Michael Johnson in your Top 5 remaining picks section for a couple picks now but when I looked up your scouting report on him he was labeled a second round pick. What gives? Sure the scouting report was before the combine but didn't people warn you about putting too faith in the measurables over on-the-field performance? I'm curious what the upgrade is based on.
Don't get me wrong, as a GT grad I've been watching him play for several seasons now and would love for him to become a Panther. All this talk of taking plays off and inconsistency is a bunch of bunk in my book. I think his measureables cause people to raise their expectations with no other basis. By any other standard he had a great senior campaign: 9 sacks (3rd in ACC); 17.5 tackles for a loss (3rd in ACC); 3 FF, 7 passes defended; 1 INT (returned for a TD); 1 blocked kick (he had 3 in his career). Here's what he did his last three collegiate games which were all huge games for the black & gold:
was a bright spot in Tech's Chick-fil-A Bowl loss to LSU (Dec. 31)... all three of his tackles were for loss, including two sacks, and he forced a Tiger fumble... recorded seven tackles, two tackles-for-loss, a sack and a pass break-up at Georgia (Nov. 29)... recorded his first career interception and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown against No. 23 Miami (Nov. 20)... also had a tackle-for-loss and two pass break-ups against the Hurricanes
So you don't have to look far for great plays this guy has provided. Other plays off the top of my head, he tipped a pass that led to a key INT in the win over BC and here's what the BC QB had to say about the play:
"They started bringing pressure from the field," Crane said. "I tried to throw over a 6-foot-7-guy and I didn't realize it."
In a win for UVA in 2007 he sacked the QB the last two plays of the game in the red zone to preserve the win. The guy truly reminds me of the Panthers own Julius Peppers, who curiously has a similar reputation. What is it about being 6' 7" and athletically gifted that makes people expect miraculous plays on a regular basis?
I hope other teams remain scared of this guy so he can drop to us at #59.
