Updated throughout the day with quick takes from staff.
While Jay Cutler was busy sitting octagon-side for Ultimate Fight Night 18 last evening in Nashville, the trade wheels were grinding. The team that has emerged as the front-runner in the Cutler sweepstakes? Danny Boy’s Redskins, of course:
The Washington Redskins are actively pursuing a trade for disgruntled Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, according to NFL sources. The Skins would certainly have to give up some package that involves Jason Campbell and a draft pick (likely their 13th overall). This deal, as we broke down over at my other site yesterday, makes absolutely zero sense for the Redskins. The difference between Campbell and Cutler right now is razor-thin, not to mention Campbell knows Zorn’s system, has improved dramatically every season, and is approximately 18x the man Cutler will ever be.One source said the Redskins are trying to complete the deal as quickly as possible although at least two other teams, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets, are also reportedly interested in acquiring Cutler.
The Redskins declined comment.
But when Dan Snyder sees something shiny that he wants he tends to get all GIMMIE GIMMIE at all costs. Oh, you want Campbell, our first overall pick this year AND this dumptruck full of gold? No problem. I’ve never pretended to care about the future of this organization, why start now? Got any aging linemen you could throw in?
Further evidence that Washington may be the best suitor: The Broncos have set-up their trading post in crazy town and are now demanding a deal that is “north of two first round picks” for Cutler. Snyder LOVES the sound of that.
Meanwhile, the man at the center of all this hoopla is now saying he didn’t want it to come to this and never wanted to be traded. Which seems odd seeing as, you know, he said before that he wanted to be traded. Pleeease just send this guy to the Lions already and let us be done with him.

Would the Skins really have to give up their 13th pick and Jason Campbell? It depends on whether or not a bidding war erupts. If all the Broncos can get for Cutler would be the Skins’ second round pick and their fourth wide receiver, and nobody offers anything better, the Broncos almost have to take it since they’ve put themselves in the position where they must get rid of Cutler no matter what. If a bidding war between Tampa, New York, and Washington develops, the Broncos could get a lot for Cutler, and the thirteenth pick and Campbell might not even be enough to get him. If a bidding war doesn’t develop, then the Broncos are SOL.

Perfect. Two spoiled brats unite. The ’Skins should get Denver to throw in a few footballs because Cutler likes to take his home.

Let us not forget that we live in the land of forgiveness. And this tantrum that Cutler has put on, will be forgotten IF he succeeds at his eventual landing destination.
As for Snyder, I can see your point but really don’t feel the Skins are the best spot. Perhaps the Lions, maybe the Bears dependent on what it takes to land Cutler.
The problem the Broncos have is they have a short window to get this thing done, so you have to expedite the process and create a bidding war with the prerequisite trade rumors.

Washington would be insane to do this and Denver would be insane not to. Cutler is going somewhere, and he is going soon. It might be fun to ship to Detroit and see how long it takes him to crack, but that will not really help the Denver Broncos. But adding Campbell and a first rounder? That’s a haul. Any other suitor is going to have to dig deep to beat that offer.

Anyone who thinks Washington shouldn’t make this deal is an idiot, just as Mottram clearly states in his own article on his own website (hit the link in his article- he states "I know nothing.") Campbell was a Gibbs draftee, and a Gibbs style QB. He’s not that great, and is certainly not a great fit for this offense. Cutler is clearly an upgrade. You can’t just place stats side by side and make a judgement on that alone. If you watch the two, Cutler is clearly the superior QB. As a lifelong Skins fan, I hope Cutler is here soon!!!

Actually, the Pro-football reference blog broke down the QBs (using fancy maths) and Cutler grades out far superior to Campbell — and I agree.

hOORAY FOR REDSKIN4LIFE!! VIINY SHOULD HAVE BEEN GONE YEARS AGO. ALL HE IS IS A YES MAN FOR SNYDER!! DOES HE HAVE PICTURE OR SOMETHING ELSE OVER SNYDER TO STAY THERE FOR SO LONG WITHOUT ANY CONSEQUENCES. THE CUTLER TRADE WOULD BE A DISASTER. THERE ARE STILL A LOT OF HOLES THAT NEED FIXED BEFORE TRADING FOR AN OVERRATED QB IN CUTLER. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK REDSKIN4LIFE

As a Bronco fan, I would love to Trade Cutler and his attitude for 2 #1’s and J. Campbell. But I would love to see Cutler unhappy in Detroit. Hmmm. Just get it done today. I guess Shanahan will replace Zorn in Washington next year so He and Jay can finally be together again

Hyponuclear, that ranking system not only rates Cutler ahead of Peyton Manning, but has Joe Flacco ahead of Kurt Warner! You can’t take something like that seriously.

Now Cutler is taking back his comments and wants to stay in Denver. He says his comments "weren’t him". It could be that he is moody from his diabeties. Those "moods" are costing Ron Santo his Hall of Fame enshrinement. Those poor media peeps who Santo stepped on sure got even with him huh. I don’t know what the answer is but I’m beginning to dislike Dan Snyder. He’s everything that is wrong with sports. Do Jason Campbell a favor and trade him Snyder. You don’t deserve him! I have nothing against Cutler but it appears he has overestimated his importance in Denver.

By the way, Ron Santo had diabeties during his career but I’m sure everyone knows that!

I would like to see Jason Campbell get a fair chance with Washington…which means given him at least 2-3 years with the same offensive scheme.
It’s an open question how Jay Cutler would be received by his teammates on the Redskins. I think that Jay Cutler would be resented by some of his teammates.
Yet, at the ame time, I could understand this trade. Cutler probably would be an upgrade, but he has a lot to prove.

I’m beginning to dislike Dan Snyder.
What took you so long? What has there ever been to like?

I am an enormous Broncos Fan. The Skins can have Jay Cutler and his petuous-snot-nosed-brat-child-like attitude. We will gladly take Campbell and a few first round draft picks. Incidentally, I will not be happy if the Broncos claim a "rebuilding" scenario and post the obligatory sub 500 performance next year. But I would gladly do it with someone the likes of Cambell, who clearly understands the business of football and it not likey to get his sensitive little feelings hurt….rather than having to watch Cutler take the field in a Broncos uniform again!
Good Rittance!

What if Bowlen and McDaniels said f&ck it Jaygay is playing for us, he’s the qb of the Denver Broncos and he’s under contract. What could immature crybaby Jaygay do then? Not a damn thing peeps, not a damn thing. See if management has the cajones to set this no playoff win, 17-20 regular season record qb who is all style and no substance. Do it Denver!

Denver scores big!!!
Chicago still without a championship caliber QB.
Sorry Bears fans, but your front office blew it on this one.
