Esiason Lets Capriati Endure Idiotic Questions

You could probably find a few things to say about WFAN host Craig Carton's performance this week when the shock-ishly jock had Jennifer Capriati on for a standard six-minute promotional spot that turned into an uncomfortable Q&A about her sexuality. Phil Mushnick already said plenty in this morning's New York Post, eviscerating Carton over 800 words while calling him a creep, a pig, a bully, a baby and a gutter-talker. But those two boys can work that one out on their own.

The more interesting performance was the one offered by Boomer Esiason, a respected voice of the NFL, a pillar of good works, and the man charged with keeping Carton in line on their AM show. Here's what Boomer had to say when Carton wondered whether Capriati would have sex with him.

"Come on," Esiason said. "I’m sorry about that. He only speaks for himself, he does not speak for me, ok?"

Brave stand, there, from the co-host of the Boomer & Carton Show. And here was Boomer's contribution when the conversation got even classier a few minutes later, with Carton asking Capriati about her Superstars colleague Joanna Krupa.

Carton: "Not that you're not hot, but you're no Joanna Krupa. How hot was she?"
Capriati: [Uncomfortable laugh] Uhhh, you know, not bad, not bad.
Carton: Would you ever get it on with a gal like that, or no?
Capriati: [Uncomfortable laugh] What kind of questions are these, man?
Carton: I only ask because she’s a beautiful woman.
Capriati: [Uncomfortable laugh]
Boomer: [Texting Mark Sanchez]
Carton: And I don’t know about your sexuality, it’s irrelevant to me, whether you like women or men or both ...
Boomer: Now come on ...
Carton: But as a single woman, you appreciate that Joanna Krupa’s gorgeous, right?
Capriati: I appreciate beauty. Yes. Her personality was great too.
Carton: Great, so I don’t know if you drink beer or if you’re totally on the wagon with everything, but is there any moment where you could see you and Joanna maybe getting it on, or no way?
Boomer: [Reviewing favorite all-time Johnsonville Brat voice-over scripts.]
Capriati: No, no way.
Carton: You like men, yes?
Capriati: Yes.
Carton: Dammit.
Capriati: These are, yeah, these are ...

Well, that's well done, Boomer. You stepped in firmly and strongly to defuse a ridiculous and awkward line of questioning from a guest who clearly didn't know what she was getting herself into, only you did it secretly, by sitting there mute and emoting silent waves of classiness from your still lush hair.

Of course, Boomer managed to perk up enough to later object when Carton called Jim Courier "half a woman," saying "easy with that, Jim's a good man," noble soul that he is. But whatever, that's the gig he signed up for, and Boomer's listeners apparently are the sorts who believe "would you kiss another chick?" constitutes the height of interviewing prowess. I'm sure it makes him very proud.

The real crime of the segment was that something billed on the WFAN Web site as Jennifer Capriati talking about "her personal life and 'preferences' " turned out to be unspeakably boring, with [uncomfortable laugh] her favorite response. The automatically generated WFAN transcript was a lot better; the machine decided Carton said things like "can't believe you're single virus found to be I mean not Netanyahu by you on the them and all that," and Capriati said things like "Now into your brain surgery" and Boomer Esiason said things like "you played review," which constitutes fairly astute analysis for him.

I’m nohere near politically correct, in fact I despise PC however this has crossed the line.  Nobody deserves this treatment, let alone Capriati, who has endured numerous taunts and much disrespect throughout her life.  This is disgraceful, and I hope this clown is fired.  As for Esiason, I have always had respect for him, but to not be more forceful on this is shameful.

Nothing else about her interests me at  this point.

I bet Boomer was thinking "Pretty girl… healthy womb…. Why?"

If this was Don Imus the NAACP and the ACLU would already be lining up at his door demanding he be fired. This guy is a clown and should lose his job for such ignorant actions.

Horrible.  Nobody should be treated that way.  This clown should be fired.

If Jennifer Capriati was named Venus or Serena Williams, the NAACP, ACLU, the loud mouthed Al Sharpton would be knocking down the door for this guy’s head. Whatever happened to good media, good questions- so many great opportunities to ask a great question to someone who literally was at rock bottom and turned her life around. Classless chump and Boomer is just as classless.

To say Carton should be fired is ridiculous.  These people have probably never listened to the show and they are just reading this article and crying foul.  This stuff is part of Carton’s schtick and it is what it is.  It is also not Boomer’s job to babysit and police Carton.  Everybody stop complaining and making this non-story a story.

NJDevils015,

That’s a typical NY/NJ macho copout.  You can play the role all you want (I was born and lived there so I know it well), but let me ask you a question – if that was any female member of your family, would your attitude be any different?  Hell yeah it would, your NY attitude wouldn’t allow you to do otherwise.  In fact, I suspect that you would be one of the first ones in line to cry foul.

There’s schtick and there’s sexual harrassment.  It almost seems as if you are condoning that type of behavior.

This guy is an idiot.

Total stupidity and foolishness from another classless shock jock.  Jaygill411 has a good point- there were a lot better questions that Carton could have asked of Capriati.  But I guess that would be considered bland and boring.  I’d like to read what Mushnick had to say about Carton in his article.

Craig Carton is a Howard Stern wanna be. If it were the Howard Stern show it would be fair game & expected, WFAN is a different venue though, and those type of questions on a sports show are inappropriate. (Unless it’s the Joe Buck show, lol.)

Capriati is 33 or 34 & more than capable of defending herself against Carton’s questions. Yes, Boomer could have come to her defense, but he is ina bit of a tough position no matter what he chooses to say or do (unless he is her boyfriend, husband, brother, etc.).

I admit, I do not listen to WFAN. Does terrestrial radio even still exist?

One more thing:  Has Carton ever asked similar questions to a male athlete. I’m sure he would get punched in the face if he did.

carton is a complete and total ripoff of mad dog russo…and he is a putz.

i listen every morning to their show . boomer is great and very respectful of others and carton is a mad dog wannabe but has no class or style.  boomer could do the show alone and it would be much better.

fan82,

Thanks for stereotyping New Yorkers in your rant.  That is quite offensive.  I would not classify myself as the macho New Yorker that you’ve pegged myself as.  I would also not classify Carton’s interview as "sexual harassment".  If Capriati felt like she was being harassed she could have simply hung up and ended the interview.  It’s also easy for you to be on your high horse and say fire the guy.  Any mistake that someone makes, people rush in to call for the person’s head, like how Don Imus was inexplicably fired for nothing.  Maybe we shouldn’t have any talk radio on the airwaves for fear of anything inappropriate happenning.
