Shanoff's W.U.C.: SEC, Ben, Vick, Red Sox, K

Today's Calls: SEC vs. the World, Big Ben and Michael Vick vs. Roger Goodell, Red Sox vs. Yankees, Coach K vs. 2012, BCS vs. CFB coaches, JP Losman vs. David Beckham and More. ↵

↵The Opening Pitch: SEC Media Days is like nothing else in sports. ↵

↵

↵We are still more than a month from the college football season's first game. Yet starting today, 800 credentialed media folks -- 800! -- will descend on Hoover, Alabama, to mix, mingle, holler questions and sniff out which coach left Tim Tebow off the coaches' preseason all-SEC team. ↵

↵

↵Over three days, the league's 12 coaches and a handful of players from each school -- Tebow! Tebow! -- will be bombarded with questions from regional reporters. It's sort of like the week before the Super Bowl, except ... um ... it's just one corner of the college football world, a full month before the season even kicks off. ↵

↵

↵There is no conference with a greater collection of coaching A-listers: Meyer. Saban. Miles. Spurrier. Petrino. Nutt. Richt. (Don't forget Lane Kiffin! Not that he'd let you. BTW, Kiffin insists he voted for Tebow.) ↵

↵

↵The event will showcase the country's biggest individual superstar and best offensive player (Tebow), its best defensive player (Tennessee's Eric Berry), its hot BCS-breakthrough team (Ole Miss) and its most insanely myopic corps of sports-talk radio hosts and beat reporters. ↵

↵

↵With apologies to fans in the Texlahomaska heartland and the hey-what-about-us Big Ten, the SEC is professionalized college football. The UFL might as well see if the SEC just wants to go pro, en masse, replacing the UFL as the NFL's would-be minor league. ↵

↵

↵(Don't believe me? How about the billion-dollar SEC (syndicated) TV network just created in a partnership between the SEC and ESPN? That suddenly gives the SEC a better TV platform than the NHL.) ↵Why would fans outside the SEC's home region want to watch the SEC? The better question is: If they love college football, why WOULDN'T they? ↵

↵

↵LeBron DunkGate Update: Does TMZ have a copy of video that shows the dunk? And are they releasing it later today? ↵

↵

↵More college TV networks: Are the Big 12, Pac-10 and ACC talking about forming a TV network of their own? TV nets are generally a great idea, but this feels like an odd fit: The ACC is a basketball-dominated league; the Big 12 is a football-dominated league; and the Pac-10 is off the radar because of its time-zone issues on the East Coast. Maybe they feel like between them, the Big 12 can be front-and-center in the fall and spring practice, the ACC front-and-center during hoops season and the Pac-10 can be the TV network's "late-night" programming. ↵

↵

↵Cheer the BCS for at least one thing: They forced the coaches to continue the practice of publicly revealing their votes on their season-ending ballots -- the ones that help determine who plays for the national title. Transparency rules, and it is nice to see the BCS acknowledge that. ↵

↵

↵Big Ben lawsuit: Yeesh, what a mess. Says Roger Goodell: "It's something that we will obviously look into." ↵

↵

↵MLB Talking Points: What's wrong with Boston? ↵

↵

↵• Phillies win 10th in row: Werth W-O in 13th. ↵

↵

↵• Yanks pass Red Sox: For 1st in AL East. ↵

↵

↵• Halladay deal deadline: Next Tuesday. ↵

↵

↵• Mets hit bottom? Blanked by Nats. ↵

↵

↵• Fantasy Stud: Erick Aybar (4/5, 3 RBI, 2 R, SB). ↵

↵

↵NBA Offseason: Carlos Boozer WILL be traded out of Utah. The only question is where. He wants to go to Miami. Dwyane Wade wants him to come to Miami. If Heat execs want to keep Wade, this would be a good way to say: "There. Now re-sign with us now." ↵

↵

↵More Magic love: Would a starting lineup of Vince Carter, Marcin Gortat, Brandon Bass, Matt Barnes and Ryan Anderson be a playoff-quality five (perhaps if given a PG to run with them)? As Shoals points out, that is the sick infusion of new players that Orlando added to its existing Howard-Lewis-Nelson core. (Now: Even in sum total, do they replace what Hedo Turkoglu brought to the table? Not quite. But, wow, no team in the NBA is deeper.) ↵

↵

↵CBB: Coach K will coach the "Repeat Team" in the 2012 Olympics. That's good news for Duke-haters, who can look forward to more March underachievement for the Blue Devils for another four years, while Coach K is distracted by his Olympic responsibilities. ↵

↵

↵(If Coach K is more interested in winning gold medals than NCAA titles ... well, I won't go there, but I think that Duke fans would be within their rights to question whether K's current commitment to the program is big enough to win the team a national championship.) ↵

↵

↵CFB: Is TCU this year's Utah? ↵

↵

↵UFL: JP Losman is the new face of the UFL? That's terrific, if the statement the league is trying to make is "We've got the NFL washouts!" The solution is so simple: The UFL should undercut the NFL age limit by 2 years. Instead of JP Losman, their cover guys could be Terrelle Pryor and Julio Jones. ↵

↵

↵Beckham Revolt, Cont'd: The fan who jumped out of the stands to confront David Beckham -- after Becks verbally challenged him -- has reportedly been banned for life from the Home Depot Center. Given the way Beckham is treating Galaxy fans, is that a punishment or a reward? ↵

↵

↵Mayfield Watch: Wait, wait! The independent (or, perhaps, "independent") test for meth that Mayfield took says he's CLEAN. That positive NASCAR test 40 minutes earlier? Bogus! Whatever you say. ↵

↵

↵Must-Read: Brian Cook on next year's Supreme Court case NFL vs. American Needle Inc. ↵

↵

↵The Last Word: "If Disney tells me he can't train here, then I won't train him here." -- Sports trainer Tom Shaw, who will likely be the one responsible for getting Michael Vick back into NFL shape, on whether there may be some controversy if Vick works out at Shaw's DisneyWorld-based training facility. (Short answer: Umm ... yes. Ain't no way Disney lets this happen.) ↵

↵

↵Meanwhile, Roger Goodell only puts "near future" on his timetable to assess whether Vick will be reinstated to the league. Here's an idea: Goodell should meet with Vick the day that Brett Favre announces his unretirement (Friday?) then announce his decision on Saturday; the story is over by Monday. ↵
