Shanoff's W.U.C.: SEC? Try 'Tebow Media Day'

Today's Calls: Tim Tebow vs. the SEC, Big Ben vs. Mike Vick, ESPN vs. the New York Post, Manny vs. Amazing, Cavs vs. Magic, MMA vs. Steroids, LeBron Dunk vs. Dud and More. ↵

↵Tim TebowThe Opening Pitch: SEC Media Days? Felt more like "Tebow Media Days" yesterday: ↵

↵

↵— Arkansas' Bobby Petrino: "As someone who has coached in the NFL, what is your perspective on Tim Tebow and his NFL prospects?" ("There's no question in my mind that he'll be very successful in the NFL.") ↵

↵

↵— Vandy's Bobby Johnson: "Do you mind disclosing who you voted for, for quarterback for the all SEC team?" ("Tim Tebow.") ↵

↵

↵— Mississippi State's Dan Mullen: "In your dealings with Tim Tebow, did you find any weaknesses in his game?" ("I probably have more respect for him than anybody I've ever met.") ↵

↵

↵— Kentucky's Rich Brooks: "Would you mind saying who you voted for the first team all conference quarterback?" ("How could I not vote for Tim Tebow?") ↵

↵

↵Here's what we know: The annual SEC hoe-down reaches its climax around noon today when Tebow himself (don't bother concealing your swooning) takes the podium — and whoever DIDN'T vote for Tebow for preseason all-SEC is going to get outed, then attacked by the Tebow-worshipping media mob. ↵

↵

↵After all, they're covering Tebow Media Days. ↵

↵

↵Must-Read: Spencer Hall from SEC Media Day. (And if you're on Twitter, you have to be following him @edsbs.) ↵

↵

↵ESPN vs. New York Post: The network has banned the newspaper from its empire after the Post gratuitously ran photos of Erin Andrews. But what will they do on First Take for yammering about the Yankees and Mets? (In retaliation, maybe the Post will talk about nothing but Ben Roethlisberger's civil suit for the rest of the week.) ↵

↵

↵Speaking of Big Ben ... There may not be any criminal investigation, but Mike Florio argues this story isn't going away anytime soon. ↵

↵

↵Vick Watch: So apparently Vick's reinstatement plan is to get the support of the new union honcho, DeMaurice Smith, before meeting with Roger Goodell in the "near future." Baby steps. ↵

↵

↵MLB Talking Points Manny being ... awesome. ↵

↵

↵— What happened to Cards? Astros earn sweep ↵

↵

↵— Phillies streak ends: Z leads Cubs ↵

↵

↵— Trade mania: Red Sox start early, but it (doesn't help) ↵

↵

↵— No, really, the Mets are terrible: ANOTHER loss to the Nats? ↵(Adding insult to insult: The Bernazard thing.) ↵

↵

↵— Must-Read: Steinberg on James on Roids ↵

↵

↵— Fantasy Stud: Manny (Pinch-hit grand slam) ↵

↵

↵NBA Offseason: Interesting analysis by Sean Deveney about contenders and pretenders for the NBA title after (most) of the summer offseason moves were made. (I think that where Lamar Odom ends up — say, LA or Miami — will materially impact the balance of power among contenders.) ↵

↵

↵While I agree with Deveney about Hedo Turkoglu's MVP-ish X-factor value to the Magic, I think he is crazy to discount Orlando as a "pretender." I put them at the top of the East; Deveney picks the Cavs. I'm trying to figure out how Shaq can possibly stop Howard — or, more accurately, the Howard-Gortat combo. (If the Cavs did anything that might stop the Magic, it's signing high-energy Jamario Moon, perhaps as designated Rashard Lewis-stopper.) ↵

↵

↵Injury Watch: Blake Griffin (shoulder). Is it the curse of the Clippers? (Or maybe just a karmic payback for stealing Summer League MVP from its rightful claimant, Anthony Randolph.) ↵

↵

↵BCS Mess: The Mountain West commish stated the obvious when he said that it could take up to five years to get meaningful BCS reform. But Craig Thompson undercuts his entire campaign when he cynically claims it is about "the kids" that the MWC re-upped its TV deal, to maintain the status quo. ↵

↵

↵CFB Recruiting: Jesse Scroggins, the top QB prospect from Lakewood, Calif., is ready to announce where he is going — from the Elite 11 QB Camp, no less. He is down to USC (where he will spend two years backing up Matt Barkley); Florida (where he will spend two years backing up John Brantley) or Tennessee (where thin QB depth means he would probably have a chance to start immediately ... but probably never compete for a national title). ↵

↵

↵Steroids in MMA? I'm sure you're shocked — shocked!to hear about this. ↵

↵

↵Economy: The SEC says, "What recession?" ↵

↵

↵The Last Word: That LeBron Dunk video? Biggest let-down in recent sports history, which makes Nike the biggest fools of all for making such a big deal out of it. ↵

↵

↵(If you'd like to be underwhelmed in slightly better quality, there is another version of the video here — where was THAT version all this time?) ↵
