Shanoff's W.U.C.: Vick, Pryor, JoePa, Rose

↵Today's Calls: Michael Vick vs. Roger Goodell, Penn State vs. Ohio State, Terrelle Pryor vs. Tim Tebow, Bud Selig vs. Pete Rose, Alfonso Soriano vs. Josh Willingham, Adam Rubin vs. Omar Minaya, Emeka Okafor vs. Tyson Chandler, Reggie Bush vs. Kim Kardashian and More. ↵

↵

↵The Opening Pitch: With Mike Vick's reinstatement, the Vick story has gone into spin mode. ↵

↵

↵From Vick: "I fully understand that playing football in the NFL is a privilege, not a right, and I am truly thankful for opportunity I have been given." ↵

↵

↵From Goodell: "I believe he is sincere in his remorse." (With conditions! Lots of 'em! Like, um, "No dogs!") ↵

↵

↵The biggest spin of all is yet to come: From teams who want to sign Vick. You know they are out there. And I'm not sure Vick's brief thanks and Goodell's cover will be enough. ↵

↵

↵Presumably, no team wants to be first -- the media glare will be brutal. (No. 1 training camp question: "Are you interested in Mike Vick?" It is this week's "Did you vote for Tim Tebow?") ↵

↵

↵Better to let another team soften up the coverage, then a 2nd (or 3rd or 8th ...) team can pivot their p.r. strategy accordingly. ↵

↵

↵Because it IS about p.r. Be clear: Plenty of teams want Vick's talent -- this is the NFL, where winning matters more than anything, including negative publicity. ↵

↵

↵But, in the case of Vick, spin strategy off the field is as much a part of player acquisition as evaluating whether he can do the job on the field. ↵

↵

↵More Vick coverage from SN: ↵

↵

↵• Who wants/needs Vick the most? (Redskins?) ↵

↵

↵• NFL players react via Twitter. ↵

↵

↵• Should you draft him? (Umm: No.) ↵

↵

↵LeBron extension coming? This notion is wishful thinking. The headline of this news could just as easily be "LeBron still not committing to Cleveland." And don't hold your breath that it's coming anytime soon. ↵

↵

↵More CFB Media Days: After last week's SEC Caligula-style affair, you could be forgiven for overlooking the Big Ten and ACC, which both started their 2-day media days yesterday. Ohio St. was the pick to win the Big Ten (watch Penn St!*); VA Tech was the pick to win the ACC (watch Georgia Tech!) ↵

↵

↵* If nothing else, Penn State claims a national championship as the No. 1-ranked "Top Party School," per Princeton Review. ↵

↵

↵Terrelle Pryor is Big Ten Offensive POY: He may not even be the best QB in the league (Darryl Clark) let alone the best offensive player (Arrelious Benn). But Pryor IS the most talented at its most glamorous position on the league's top team -- and thus most marketable -- and that matters. ↵

↵

↵Must-Read: Spencer Hall on the difference between SEC Media Days and other conferences' media days. ↵

↵

↵More: Big Ten expert Brian Cook on the league's media day -- including a "Who said it?" quote quiz that includes a Tebow zinger from Pat Fitzgerald (Fitz knows how to get the coverage in Florida, where he has been recruiting successfully this offseason). ↵

↵

↵Baseball Hall: I'm no prude, but I'm with Bud Selig that Pete Rose's ban should be upheld ... for now. Betting on baseball is a much worse offense than taking PEDs. Do Rose's stats merit his inclusion? Of course. Do his sins pass the test of unforgivability yet? Nope. (I do think his reinstatement is inevitable.) ↵

↵

↵MLB Talking Points ↵

↵

↵• What's better than a walk-off grand slam? ↵

↵

↵• How about a guy who hits TWO grand slams? ↵

↵

↵• Lincecum affirms he's the best: 15 Ks. ↵

↵

↵• Welcome to your 15 minutes, Adam Rubin. ↵

↵

↵• Home, road doesn't matter: Yanks roll on. ↵

↵

↵NFL Camping: How much to read into Brando Marshall showing up at Broncos' early-attendees camp? Eh: Not much. ↵

↵

↵NBA Offseason: Emeka Okafor for Tyson Chandler? Properly, Shoals doesn't get it, particularly from Charlotte's point of view. (Let's remind him that Michael Jordan is running the show down there.) ↵

↵

↵Law: Plaxico is going to jail, period. At least if the DA has anything to say about it. ↵

↵

↵Pop Culture: Reggie Bush and Kim Kardashian have reportedly split up. Bush's on-field performance while dating her has been spotty, at best, so for the sake of his career you can only hope that he heads into the season with monk-like (or do we now say "Tebow-like") focus. ↵

↵

↵Shaq hosts WWE Raw? Sounds about right. ↵

↵

↵TV ads: I like Brett Favre's ability to laugh at himself here. But it still doesn't make me like him. ↵

↵

↵New Media: "Hey, you guys have got to talk about something. The fans have got to put something on those — what do you guys call those things, Twittle-do, Twittle-dee? I haven't got the slightest idea what you're looking at, either." -- Joe Paterno to Big Ten media about social media. ↵

↵

↵The Last Word: "He's the most dangerous quarterback I saw last year. He might be the most dangerous in the country." -- Bobby Bowden at ACC Media Day. Was he talking about Tim Tebow? Nope: NC St QB Russell Wilson. (The Tebow Mafia has noted Bowden's comment and bulletin-boarded it accordingly.) ↵
