Shanoff's W.U.C.: Favre Done? I Don't Buy It

Today's Calls: Brett Favre vs. Retirement, Michael Vick vs. Reinstatement, Roy Halladay vs. Mark Buehrle, Jarrod Washburn vs. Scott Kazmir, Terrelle Pryor vs. Tim Tebow, Michael Phelps vs. Arena swimsuits, Bobby Bowden vs. Joe Paterno and More. ↵

↵The Opening Pitch: Ah, Brett Favre, you disappoint me. ↵

↵

↵I was sure you would come back this season, don the purple of your Packer-backers' most hated rival and lead the Vikings to the promise of a playoff appearance -- one last gasp at gunslinger glory. ↵

↵

↵But no: You had to recognize the drain of the season on your aging body and decide to stay retired. Let me be among the first to say: ↵

↵

↵I don't believe you. ↵

↵

↵No. 1: I don't believe that you are retired this season. There are still a handful of days left before training camps really kick in -- plenty of time for you to change your mind again ... um, again. Especially after 24-72 hours of media slobbery you will receive. ↵

↵

↵No. 2: Even if you do sit out this season, I don't believe that you are retired NEXT season. After a year away from the game, a year to rest, a year to get healthy, a year for new suitors to emerge -- perhaps your still-desperate-for-a-QB Vikings -- you will re-spark the talk. And we will come crawling back. ↵

↵

↵So enjoy your new (or latest) retirement ... while it lasts. ↵

↵

↵You'll be back. And so will we. ↵

↵

↵What should the Vikings do next? Two words: Michael. Vick. Because the alternatives are uninspiring: Sage Rosenfels? Tarvaris Jackson? Throw Percy Harvin back there? Um ... Jeff George? ↵

↵

↵(Vick Watch: Ravens thinking about Vick? That doesn't seem to make much sense, given that they already have backup QB Troy Smith available in the "Wildcat"-ish role, which they flashed a few times last season. NOT interested -- at least for now: Jaguars, who would be an interesting fit for Vick.) ↵

↵

↵Mark Buehrle rules: "45" is this season's "56." Hard to imagine a starting pitcher -- or any pitcher -- matching Buehrle's MLB-record 45 straight batters retired. With the spotlight on him after the perfect game, he delivered again perfectly for 6 more innings. (The irony that he actually ended up losing the game makes him even more likeable.) ↵

↵

↵Halladay Trade Rumors: Red Sox move up in Doc sweepstakes? I do not understand why the Jays would trade their ace to a team within their own division. I guess Toronto is writing off both this season AND next season, at least as it relates to competing for a division title. ↵

↵

↵Yankees hot for Jarrod Washburn? Talked with a big Mariners fan yesterday who reminded me that Washburn -- much like the Mariners -- has been playing with house money all season long. "Regress to the mean" would track to happen right around the moment he would put on the pinstripes. ↵

↵

↵MLB Talking Points ↵

↵

↵• 3rd straight "Last game for Jays?" for Halladay. ↵

↵

↵• Hmm: Something going wrong with the Dodgers? ↵

↵

↵• New strategy for Mets: Exec turmoil = wins. ↵

↵

↵• Kazmir still good enough to trump Sabathia. ↵

↵

↵• Injury Watch: Roy Oswalt | Big Unit. ↵

↵

↵CFB Media Days: ↵Big Ten:It's not too early to think about how good Terrelle Pryor will be in 2010. ↵

↵

↵ACC: Spencer Hall offers a couple of ways for the conference to grow -- yes: More Paul Johnson, no: wishing for an SEC-like TV deal. ↵

↵

↵NFL Camping: Today's openings ↵

↵

↵• Cowboys (San Antonio): Life after T.O. ↵

↵

↵• Raiders (Napa Valley): McFadden Time? ↵

↵

↵Michael Phelps ... lost? And the suit controversy reaches an inflection point. It was all well and good when Phelps was the one in the super-suit, annihilating records. But when another racer (in, gasp, another brand) does it? Time to ban those suckers. Can't hurt The Product. (And I don't mean the suits.) ↵

↵

↵NBA Offseason: Bethlehem Shoals rethinks the Okafor-Chandler deal. ↵

↵

↵Meanwhile, guess who became an easy, quiet signing for his team? Brandon Jennings. (Yes, credit the NBA's sane rookie salary structure, but also Jennings' previous experience as a pro.) ↵

↵

↵(Compare that to, say, Michael Crabtree. After Crabtree's draft-day slide, he really needed to shut up and sign a deal, then show he is the playmaker he thinks he is. Instead, it looks like he's going to hold out. What a fool.) ↵

↵

↵RIP, Jim Johnson. Condolences to family, friends and fans of the longtime Eagles defensive coordinator. ↵

↵

↵Violations: Alabama with a sense of entitlement about their NCAA punishments? You don't say! (Florida State is more likely to try some backdoor trickery, of which Spencer Hall does not approve.) ↵

↵

↵The Last Word: "It was the hardest decision I've ever made." -- Brett Favre (which is why he'll be back). ↵
