Shanoff's W.U.C.: Can Bill Clinton Save Sports?

Bill ClintonToday's Calls: Bill Clinton vs. Mike Vick, Prince Fielder vs. Guillermo Mota, Evan Longoria vs. the Red Sox, Kobe vs. Shaq and LeBron, Dave Wannstedt vs. Brian Kelly, Lou Holtz vs. Congress, NFL vs. Twitter and More. ↵

↵The Opening Pitch: What else can Bill Clinton do for us? ↵

↵

↵Coming off his successful mediation work with North Korea to free the two imprisoned Americans, Bill Clinton has some time on his hands. I would like to put the former First Fan to work in the sports world on some of our most intractable stand-offs: ↵

↵

↵— Find Michiael Vick a team. ↵
↵— Pick between Tebow, Bradford and McCoy. ↵
↵— Negotiate a long-term deal in Cleveland with LeBron. ↵
↵— Solve fantasy football's biggest problem by prioritizing the teams with RB-by-committee. ↵
↵— Arbitrate MLB's release of "The List"? ↵
↵— Antonio Cromartie's Twitter feed vs. the Chargers
↵— Free Roy Halladay! (Too late.) ↵

↵

↵Once Clinton is settled back in the U.S., let's take advantage of the dog days of summer to get these things solved. ↵

↵

↵Put your own sports stand-offs in the comments. ↵

↵

↵Fielder vs. Mota: Don't stop Fielder at the Dodgers' clubhouse door! I'd kind of like to see this tussle. Fielder is a load at 5-11/270 lbs (listed), but Mota is no Tinkerbell — he is listed at 6-5/233. (By the way, Mota was out of line, but better a retribution pitch in a 17-4 blowout than a tight game.) ↵

↵

↵MLB Talking Points ↵

↵

↵— Another big Rays-Sox game: Another Tampa win. ↵

↵

↵— Old: Halladay is The Man; new: Losing to Yanks. ↵

↵

↵— When did Hank Aaron become such a busybody? ↵

↵

↵— Walk-Off: Pods leads ChiSox over Angels ↵

↵

↵— Fantasy Stud: Albert Pujols (who else?) ↵

↵

↵Vick Watch: The Packers won't rule him out! Maybe they remember the way he owned Lambeau in the playoffs? Or they want a Wildcat option. Or they think their amazing fans can provide the right support system. One thing's for sure: Brett Favre will NOT like this. ↵

↵

↵Plaxico Scandal: Antonio Pierce regrets nothing. ↵

↵

↵NBA Schedule released: Kobe vs. Shaq (um, think LeBron likes that framing?) on Christmas Day is the Game of the Year. ↵

↵

↵More Scheduling: Sean Deveney has 5 Must-Sees (No. 2: Raptors-Blazers? Really?) Bethlehem Shoals has a list of gonzo game picks. ↵

↵

↵Allen Iverson to Greece? Feels more like an exile at the end of his career than an opportunity. But I kind of like the notion of AI's reinvention as some kind of worldwide ambassador of basketball. ↵

↵

↵CFB: Big East Media Day. Pitt was picked to win the conference, although I'm not quite sure how you could bet on a Dave Wannstedt-coached team over Brian Kelly and defending conference champ Cincinnati. ↵

↵

↵Florida Watch: The Gators' WR corps just got a little more solid with presumptive starter Riley Cooper negotiating a return to the team this fall, even though he signed a baseball deal with the Texas Rangers. He is one of Tim Tebow's favorite targets, going back three years — maybe that helped with the decision. ↵

↵

↵Lou Holtz for Congress? The insane part is he would probably win. (Let's consider a possible slogan: "The Dr. is In!") ↵

↵

↵NFL Draft: Who is the top NFL RB prospect in college football? The same as it has been for the past two seasons, too — Clemson's C.J. Spiller. ↵

↵

↵NHL: Jeremy Roenick retiring? Presuming he will find his way to TV. ↵

↵

↵CBB: The best potential match-up among the various preseason tournaments next fall? Villanova (one of my Final Four locks) versus Georgia Tech (with potentially two NBA 1st-round frontcourt players. TSB’s Chris Littmann does the heavy lifting. ↵

↵

↵Is the AFL going under? Here's my take why it succeeded — and why it failed. ↵

↵

↵The Last Word: NFL teams need to get with the times. Fining players for tweeting and — worse — banning reporters from filing tweets from practices (while the fans behind them can) is short-sighted. Whatever the potential for half-baked info (like there isn't half-baked info in the print newspaper?) it makes fans care MORE about the league. (Don't confuse that with media companies, who can have any Twitter policy for their people that they want.) ↵
