Shanoff's WUC: Favre, Rubio, Thome, Erin A.

Today's Calls: Brett Favre vs. Eugene Wilson, Erin Andrews vs. Oprah, Ricky Rubio vs. David Kahn, Rich Rodriguez vs. Media Horde, Jim Thome vs. Manny Ramirez, Venus vs. Federer, USC vs. the Pac-10 and More. ↵
↵
↵The Opening Pitch: We knew Brett Favre was the NFL's most selfish player, but its dirtiest, too?
↵

↵The must-see highlight of last night's Vikings game was not Adrian Peterson's game-opening TD romp or Favre "heroically" overcoming his murky rib situation to complete most of his passes. ↵

↵

↵It was Favre's shocking crackback block on Houston's Eugene Wilson, breathtaking for not just how blatantly illegal it was, but the spirit in which those kinds of blocks are delivered. ↵

↵

↵"What was up with that?" Wilson told the AP. "Seriously: What was up with that?" ↵

↵

↵It is the Favre question that everyone will be talking about today, fuel for the haters -- it felt like everything that Tirico, Jaws and Gruden could do last night to keep themselves from labeling the play what it was: Dirty. (Imagine, for a moment, if Mike Vick had done that.) ↵

↵

↵Favre said his intentions were not to hurt anyone, and I believe him. But if his natural instinct was to go at Wilson's knees, that says a lot more about him than his protest that if he hadn't gone for the block, "that looks worse." A reminder that, for Favre, looks always matter. ↵

↵

↵And this looked -- well, let's call it what it looked like: Dirty. ↵

↵

↵NBA: Ricky Rubio signs 6-year deal with Spain's DKV Joventut that doesn't have an "out" until 2011. Way to go, David Kahn! I guess Kahn can afford to wait -- after all, Rubio will only be 20 with two more years of high-level European experience. But by then, Flynn will be established as THE guy. And Rubio still won't want to play in Minnesota. Time to trade. (No, not today -- but at some point. The Knicks are loving this development.) ↵

↵

↵MLB Talking Points ↵

↵

↵• What trade deadline? Dodgers get Thome, Garland. ↵

↵

↵• NL Wild Card: Braves making a run? ↵

↵

↵• 2,000 in attendance? Best. Seats. Ever. ↵

↵

↵• Yankees ALDS ticket discount! Eh, not what you think. ↵

↵

↵• Fantasy Stud: Adam Lind (2 HR, 8 RBI, 3 R). ↵

↵

↵Michigan Scandal-ish, Cont'd: Rich Rod cries, and I think that was supposed to make him endearing or something. Not working. (Matt Hayes nails it: NCAA violations won't get you fired -- losing and NCAA violations will get you fired.) ↵

↵

↵US Open opens: Venus survived a scare, and "RF" cruised (what a thrill for NCAA champ Devin Britton to even get a couple of games off of Federer). Andy Roddick's match started at 11 p.m. -- good practice for tuning in for Oregon-Boise State on Thursday (late) night. ↵

↵

↵More USC problems: CB Shareece Wright ruled ineligible for the season. He was perhaps the Trojans' most talented cornerback. It ain't USC's year, but when you stockpile h.s. all-Americans like Carroll has, it's not a big of a loss as it would be for lesser teams. ↵

↵

↵SN Countdown: No. 4 USC. But if you don't think USC is going to win the Pac-10 this year, can you really rank the Trojans in the Top 5? (I can: USC will beat Ohio State in Columbus, but lose the Pac-10 to, say, Oregon. They will finish 11-1 as an at-large BCS team but NOT a conference champ.) ↵

↵

↵Alabama DE Brandon Deaderick shot: Here's hoping he'll have a full and speedy recovery. ↵

↵

↵Tedy Bruschi retires: Mock if you want, but if Bill Belichick -- perhaps the best coach in NFL history -- calls you the "perfect player," you have done something right in your career. ↵

↵

↵More retirements: Zach Thomas, who may not earn "perfect player" from Bill Belichick but will always have a huge base of fans in Miami. ↵

↵

↵NFL Coaching Carousel: Chan Gailey fired as Chiefs offensive coordinator. Things have to be particularly bad when you are brought in with a 1st-year coach and can't even make it out of the preseason. ↵

↵

↵(Meanwhile, taking a page from the Belichick playbook, Todd Haley -- now KC's OC, in addition to its HC -- won't say how badly Matt Cassel is hurt. Yahoo! is reporting that it is an MCL sprain that could keep Cassel out up to a month.) ↵

↵

↵NFL Must-Read: Florio on Crabtree, who has done himself no favors with this holdout. ↵

↵

↵California fires: Is UCLA going to have to postpone its season-opener? ↵

↵

↵Twitter: The NFL lays out its policy -- no players or coaches or anyone affiliated with the league can Tweet or make Facebook updates within 90 minutes of kickoff or until after the traditional postgame media sessions. (Will the media get away with tweeting from these sessions?) ↵

↵

↵Jersey sales: Brett Favre is already No. 1 in the NFL for the summer. It's been two weeks. It's like Vikings fans are so desperate to have a jersey with "FAVRE" on it that they are rushing to buy it before he can retire again. (That, from someone with TWO Michael Jordan Wizards jerseys.) ↵

↵

↵The Last Word: "Nightmare." -- Erin Andrews to Oprah, on having a nude video of her illicitly taken and briefly spread around the Web. ↵

↵

↵If you're Erin Andrews and you went through something you'd rather not talk about but have to talk about publicly -- if just once -- the only thing to do is go on Oprah: She is the queen, and there is no substitute. It was taped yesterday; it will be aired on 9/11. ↵
