Fifth-year senior QB Joe Cox will not play in the UGA-South Carolina game this weekend due to "an arm issue," according to ESPN.com's Chris Low. Cox didn't look to be at full strength during the Oklahoma State game last week, either, but team sources have said that was due to the flu, a totally separate issue from whatever's going on with his arm.
DawgSports is confirming it with their own sources, and like many UGA fans doesn't seem too broken up over the notion of the athletic and highly touted freshmen Logan Gray starting against South Carolina. With good reason, too: Cox looked both uneasy in the pocket and unable to make the throws he had to make against Oklahoma State, underthrowing A.J. Green on a number of attempts and struggling to operate the Bulldog offense.
One streak seems sure to survive this game intact now: this century's streak on keeping the winning total in this game below 20 points, with the high for this millennium being 18 points scored in an 18-0 shutout of the Gamecocks by UGA in 2006. A freshman quarterback and a South Carolina offense that managed seven points against NC State means punters are going to be in need of ice on Sunday morning.
