In an attempt to limit distractions, England coach Fabio Capello will limit visits from players’ wives and girlfriends to one day a week during next year’s World Cup (which England officially qualified for Wednesday):
Seeking to avoid a repeat of what defender Rio Ferdinand called “a circus” when the glamorous wives and girlfriends – the so-called WAGS – stayed near the players at the 2006 tournament in Germany, Capello is set to take a tougher stance than his predecessors.
“I hope we will be there for a very long period but the players will have one day with their family, with the girls and with their friends,” Capello said. "It will be one day a week, after each game, and that is enough. That’s it. We are there to play football, not for a holiday.
Weird. I don’t really see what the big distraction would be by allowing the WAGs to hang around… oh. I see. Nevermind.
