Week 2 Add/Drop: Some Obvious (And Some Not So Obvious) Names

Week 1 is in the books, and it’s time to look at who you should pick up for Week 2 and who you should jettison.

Add

Mike Bell - We told you he was poised for a breakout game against the abysmal Lions defense, and he certainly delivered. Now Saints head coach Sean Payton is sending mixed signals about who will be the Saints’ featured back once Pierre Thomas returns from injury. Bell remains inexplicably unowned in far too many leagues. Add him now. You might be getting a top ten back.

Cadillac Williams – So much for the "2-2-1" timeshare Bucs head coach Raheem Morris promised the team would employ. After the first week, Cadillac Williams and Derrick Ward appear to be in a strict 50-50 timeshare. And if Williams continues to impress with his assertive, powerful running (and can stay healthy), he could easily emerge as the featured back. He is criminally unowned. Pick him up now.

Darren Sproles - Somehow Sproles is unowned in a tenth of leagues. And as you might have heard, LT is already banged up. And even when (if?) LT is back to full strength, he could very well find himself in a platoon with the diminutive Sproles. If he’s somehow unowned, scoop Sproles up now, and try to pry him away from his owner in a trade if he’s not.

Shaun Hill – His throwing motion may be unconventional (and evoke comparisons to Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite), but somehow, someway, he puts up respectable fantasy numbers. His 209 passing yards and one touchdown line from Week 1 are certainly good enough to plug in during a bye week or for an injured starter (cough, Donovan McNabb, cough).

Laurent Robinson – This little known pro who lit it up for the Rams during the preseason went for five catches and 87 yards in Week 1. More importantly, he received ten targets from quarterback Marc Bulger. The Rams figure to be trailing in a fair number of games, so they will be in pass-happy mode quite often. Robinson should benefit.

Earl Bennett – Maybe all that talk about former Vanderbilt teammates Bennett and Jay Cutler having a special bond. Bennett received 13 targets, hauling in seven passes for 66 yards. Someone will catch balls in the Bears offense (and sometimes, they’ll even be wearing Bears uniforms). Bennett appears to have the inside track at this point.

Antwaan Randle El – After moving back into the slot to make way for second year pro Malcolm Kelly on the outside, Randle El went off – to the tune of seven catches for 98 yards. He had nine targets on the day, so quarterback Jason Campbell looked his way frequently. Randle El is worth stashing in deeper leagues as a strict matchups play.

Todd Heap - Look who’s hit the rejuvenation machine! The largely forgotten former fantasy darling got eight targets with five catches for 74 yards and a touchdown in the Ravens’ opener against the Chiefs. With the Ravens beginning to take the training wheels off Joe Flacco, and Heap appearing healthy for the first time in years, the former Arizona State standout could be back for a vintage season. If you’re not thrilled about your prospects at tight end, Heap is definitely worth a look.

Steve Smith - No, not the Panther’ star receiver; the other Steve Smith – you know, the former USC standout on the Giants. Against the Redskins, Smith received eight targets, with six catches for 80 yards. Smith is as good a bet as any to emerge as the Giants' top target. Pick up the sure-handed wideout and stash him.

Drop

Earnest Graham – Graham toted the ball once in Week 1. Too bad "unselfishness" isn’t a fantasy stat. Dump him.

Chris Chambers - Chambers is the forgotten man in the Chargers’ passing game. You should forget him too.

Grab 'Em While They're Hot: Must Adds

The guys over at Razzball have a few adds from the free agency pool you should consider.

Todd Heap: If he’s available and you punted on TE pick him up now. He made a heap of good plays and should have praise heaped upon him.

Patrick Crayton: He’ll fly off the wire like a flock of starlings after Army scores a touchdown. 134 yards and a TD isn’t found on the wire that often. I liked him enough to draft him in a few leagues and if you need someone to fill in for Anthony Gonzalez he might do the trick, just don’t expect these kind of numbers too often!

Joshua Cribbs: Even in non-return yardage leagues he is worth a look. The Browns don’t have all that much going on offense and they need his big play ability in there as often as possible. He’s still a flier at this point, but worth a stash.

Robert Meachem: He still has too many guys in front of him to do too much, but if you are in a return yardage league I’d grab him if he’s around.

Mark Sanchez: He looked like a starting QB. He will have his ups and downs. He gets the Patriots at home next week. I wouldn’t start him against Belichick, but if the waiver wire is LenDale White thin and you need a backup QB I’d take a chance on him.

Add/Drop for Week 2: Running Back Depth

After Week 1 of the NFL season, everybody is scrambling to the waiver wire. While your fellow fantasy owners are fighting over the "hot" free agents (yeah, Mike Vick, we get it) this would be a good time to strengthen your bench depth.

Week 1 revealed that there are several backup running backs that you should know about, even if you don't need them as a handcuff. Everybody knows about Jeff Garcia, but here are some RB2s that most people don't know about.

Brian Leonard - Cedric Benson's solid Week 1 (21 carries for 76 yds and 1 TD) shows that the Bengals are willing and able to run the ball this year. If something happens to Benson, Brian Leonard will be the guy that takes over. Cedric is firmly in the RB1 role right now, but we are talking about a guy once arrested for drunken boating so anything can happen. If you have the bench spot available, Leonard makes a nice Plan B.

Garrett Wolfe - Matt Forte stinks. OK, not really, but he didn't look good (25 carries for 55 yards) against the Packers on Sunday night. He IS only in his second season in the league, so neither fantasy owners nor the Bears should expect him to be the second coming of Walter Payton. Unfortunately, fantasy owners have done exactly that, but maybe the Bears have a different plan. Wolfe only had three carries on Sunday, but his 5.0 yards per carry average means the Bears should be looking to give him work to keep Forte fresh. With RB Kevin Jones out for the season, Wolfe looks like a critical Forte handcuff who may start to get work on his own.

Rashard Mendenhall - The Steelers couldn't do anything on the ground against Tennessee (22 rushes for 33 yards!!) and even though the Titans D is one of the best, that's a bad sign for all Willie Parker owners. It's an even worse sign for Rashard Mendenhall owners because when it became clear that Parker wasn't getting it done Pittsburgh went to RB3 Mewelde Moore instead of Mendenhall. And even worse than that, Moore did well. OK, five rushes for eight yards isn't that great, but in the fourth quarter and overtime they ONLY gave the ball to Moore. If Pittsburgh has a two-headed rushing attack, it could easily be Parker-Moore, not Parker-Mendenhall.

Earnest Graham - A lot of fantasy owners snapped up Graham thinking that he could be the TD-stealing fullback in Tampa. At worst he'd share time with Derrick Ward, right? Wrong! The Bucs unleashed Cadillac "Remember Me?" Williams on the fantasy world with a 13 carry, 97 yard, 1 TD performance. Derrick Ward helped out with 12 carries and a touchdown. Where was Graham? One carry for one yard. Abort! Barring an injury, it looks like Graham is the odd man out. Cut your losses with him now.
