Craft Gets First-Team Reps Over Breihaut

From the O.C. Register:

UCLA quarterback Richard Brehaut watched as Kevin Craft took nearly all of the first-team repetitions. He watched as Craft was summoned by offensive coordinator Norm Chow for lengthy, private discussions.

By the time practice ended Thursday and Coach Rick Neuheisel said the quarterback position was the most difficult for a true freshman to prepare for, Brehaut had left the field. […]

For the second day in a row the senior worked primarily with the first team. It is a telling sign considering Brehaut, who said Tuesday how much he needed repetitions, is a true freshman with just two career attempts in college.

Bruins Will Reportedly Start Freshman Breihaut Over Craft at QB for Kansas ST Game

UCLA lost their starter, Kevin Prince, to a broken jaw this past Saturday against Tennessee. The logical conclusion, if you were looking at the roster, would be to call the number of last year's starting quarterback, Kevin Craft, and roll on through the K-State game and the rest of the 3-4 game Prince will miss while recovering. Rick Neuheisel believes you can take that logic and shove it, nerd:

Senior Kevin Craft, who started all 12 games in 2008, will get a look during this week's practice and could see some playing time, but offensive coordinator Norm Chow is an opponent of job sharing so the lion's share of snaps appeared ticketed for Brehaut.

There is a solid statistical reason for starting the freshman Richard Breihaut, though. As shaky as he might be under center as a first-time starter, he likely won't be as wobbly as the now-senior Craft was as a starter last year. Craft threw 7 TDs to 20 INTs on the year, a shocking ratio for a Norm Chow coached offense. Breihaut will also be helped by facing an anemic K-State team fresh off a loss to University of Louisiana-Lafayette, which is a nice gentle intro for your D-1 football career.
