Kansas Football, Hoops Can't Play Nice

This probably isn't the way Bill Self hoped to finish the offseason. Things had been going so well. Cole Aldrich and Sherron Collins came back to Lawrence. Tyshawn Taylor was great for the USA U19 team, leading them to a gold medal as the top scorer on the team. (He's also Mike DeCourcy's No. 9 shooting guard for this season.) But less than a month away from KU's Late Night in the Phog event to kick off the season, Taylor is injured and will miss the next three-to-four weeks. ↵
↵⇥Taylor was involved — and injured — in an incident that broke out in front of Burge Union on the KU campus shortly after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, a source confirmed Tuesday night. ↵⇥

↵⇥A source said several people witnessed a skirmish between members of the KU football team and basketball team. The identities of the other players involved were not known as of Tuesday night. ↵⇥

↵⇥Police were called to Jayhawker Towers about 10:25 p.m. Tuesday to disperse a crowd of about 20 individuals gathering in the parking lot of the Towers. The Journal-World police scanner indicated it was in response to the incident that happened earlier in the day. ↵⇥

↵

↵Two incidents like this in the same night? Look, I can appreciate that Kansas football has been on the rise for a bit now, but know your role, gridiron Jayhawks. Do you have a national title in the last few years? You are, and always will be, second fiddle at best at Kansas so long as there's a men's basketball program. So please, no matter who instigated this incident, step away from the star shooting guard and don't go messing up a potential national championship season. ↵

↵

↵Perhaps I'm being too harsh on KU football. According to two reports, Taylor wrote on his Facebook page that he injured the thumb throwing a punch. (Keep your head, Tyshawn! You've got big things ahead this year.) ↵

↵

↵The good news is that the duration of this injury -- just three-to-four weeks -- puts him back shortly after midnight madness and in plenty of time to thump on whatever poor teams have to face the Jayhawks' wrath early in the season. Even if things got really bad, I imagine Bill Self would have no trouble just sitting Taylor for the first three games of the season against Fort Hays State, Pittsburg State and Hofstra. The first game of consequence comes on Nov. 17 against Memphis. Of course, if it's true that Taylor threw a punch, you could see a suspension at some point, too. ↵

↵

↵UPDATE: A second LJW story indicates the fight might've started over a woman. ↵

↵

↵UPDATE No. 2: And now there's word of a third incident. If I'm Bill Self, I'm finding Xavier Henry, Sherron Collins and Cole Aldrich and locking them in a room until things cool down. Can't have your best guys getting suspended and/or injured this close to the season. ↵

↵

↵UPDATE No. 3: The University Daily Kansan has word on some of the players being questioned by police. ↵

↵
↵⇥Among them were the Morris twins, Mario Little, Sherron Collins, Tyshawn Taylor, Brady Morningstar, Travis Releford, Tyrel Reed, Thomas Robinson, Elijah Johnson and many other players. The only football players identified in the group were Dezmon Briscoe and Chris Harris, whom police from the KU Police Department were questioning. ↵
↵

↵UPDATE 4: After the jump, a statement issued by some of the key members of the basketball and football programs through the Kansas athletic department. ↵

↵

↵Found via the LJW: ↵

↵
↵⇥“We realize that over the past couple of days we’ve let a disagreement between a few guys grow bigger than it ever should have. We’re embarrassed about that. ↵⇥

↵⇥“Now we want everyone know that we have met and talked it out. We realize we’re all Jayhawks. We’re proud of what both teams have accomplished. ↵⇥

↵⇥

↵⇥“We appreciate the support these teams give each other. We’ll be in the stands rooting for each other like we always have. ↵⇥

↵⇥

↵⇥“We all wear KANSAS on our uniforms, and we’re proud of that. We need to act like it. We’ve met; we’re all on the same page, and we will move forward together. The football team is ready to get back to work, focused on Saturday’s game against Southern Mississippi and the basketball team will continue to prepare for another great season.” ↵⇥

↵⇥

↵⇥Basketball — Cole Aldrich, Sherron Collins. ↵⇥

↵⇥

↵⇥Football — Kerry Meier, Todd Reesing, Jake Sharp, Darrell Stuckey. ↵⇥

↵
↵

↵UPDATE 5: At least one fan is having some fun, joking about a phrase Tyshawn Taylor used on his Facebook page: "point plankn." Yes, we've now got Rock 'Em, Sock 'Em Jayhawks.
