Johnny Miller is a ubiquitous golf announcer: He’s the guy you hear just about every time you tune into a golf event, and you’d recognize his voice almost immediately. But you might not know that much about him. I didn’t. Which is why this is a helpful factoid: Johnny Miller apparently really likes to talk about himself. A lot.
Johnny Miller: I don’t want to brag, but I do more homework on the course than any other announcer. I chart the greens to get all the breaks. I walk down into the greenside bunkers. I walk into the fairway bunkers to see whether a player can reach the green from them. My goal is to get to know the course as [well] or better than the players.
That’s some straight golf swagger, is what that is. Miller chooses to flout his knowledge of “greenside bunkers.” Ric Flair would have just said “woo!” a lot. But the effect is the same.
