Hurricanes Confirm Ward Extension

The Carolina Hurricanes have confirmed speculation that Cam Ward signed an extension with the team. They have not released any details of the contract as of yet. They are expected to give details at a press conference that is scheduled for 1 p.m. The team released the following statement…

The reasoning behind this deal is very similar to Eric Staal’s extension last summer. Ward will be a restricted free agent at the end of next season, which opens the window for another team to sign him to a lucrative offer sheet. General Manager Jim Rutherford similarly isn’t taking that chance with his other franchise player. It also gives Ward the piece of mind of not having to sweat it out in a contract year.
