Offsides: Rock 'Em, Sock 'Em LeGarrette Blount

UPDATE: Blount's season is finished.

On Thursday, Brian Cook joked about putting together two of college football's ugliest things -- Oregon's uniforms and Boise's smurf turf -- but LeGarrette Blount saved the ugliest part of Thursday night's season opener for the postgame. Two questions today: Will it take more than 24 hours to render a verdict on Blount's future? What will that verdict be?

Maybe we should've seen this coming, as Blount told SI back in the summer that the Ducks "owe [Boise] an ass-whupping" after the Broncos won at Oregon last season.

After the jump a more PG-13 version of last night's punch.

LaGarrette Blount-Force Trauma, FINISH HIM!

And since you skipped the part where #94 smacked him on the shoulder pads and yelled something in his face, I’ll ask what #94 said.

Both should serve the same penalty.

by dtalbott on Sep 4, 2009 9:04 AM EDT reply actions

He should lose his scholarship, as well as be charged with assault. I still can’t believe what I saw last night. Besides the cheap shot, He also punched one of his teammates, tried to go after fans in the stands and had to be restrained by some Boise cops, Oregon and stadium staff. I like Oregon so I hope they do the right thing. Good post bud.

Both should serve the same penalty? Really? Short of dropping an N-bomb on Blount — who I will point out again, had already said they "owe [Boise] an ass-whupping" — what could Hoyt have POSSIBLY said that would equate to that knockout punch when it comes to dolling out penalties?

by littmann.tsn on Sep 4, 2009 9:10 AM EDT reply actions

Dtalbot- You have to be joking!!!!! Please don’t tell me you are trying t to defend Blount. Also don’t try to reinvent what everyone saw on the video. That guy on Boise State did poke him on the pads and say something, but nothing that warranted Blount’s cowardly and psychotic actions! Totally bush league.I can’t believe people re already trying to support Blount! What a joke!

by Hippi-Kat on Sep 4, 2009 9:15 AM EDT reply actions

Whatever he said, it was enough for his coach to grab him and start yelling at him.

  1. already gets credit for time served…on the ground.

Now back to the real issue: Blount’s suspension or permanent dismissal?

by LSUFreek.tsn on Sep 4, 2009 9:16 AM EDT reply actions

This is not a reflection on the Oregon Duck fan base,  it’s coaches or anyone within the program.   It is a reflection of a player who is out of control.   Not only that,  but this isn’t the first time he has been in trouble.  To say the Boise State player should get the same penalty is inane.    The Boise State player precipitated the event but he didn’t make a total fool of himself, such as Blount did,  nor did he need to be restrained and marched to the lockerroom.   Very sad day.   Oregon fans, I am very sorry,  this isn’t fair to you either.

by miatay on Sep 4, 2009 9:24 AM EDT reply actions

Yes, because as a general rule, coaches LOVE it when players jump into postgame frays with the opposition. You never see coaches trying to stop that.

@LSUFreek — I’m wondering if Blount’s history won’t work against him here. This isn’t his first disciplinary issue. He was suspended indefinitely from the team back in February.

by littmann.tsn on Sep 4, 2009 9:25 AM EDT reply actions

I suspect Blount will just be suspended indefinitely (… once again).

However, with said history working against Blount, this really will be a Chip Kelly blackeye if Blount is not permanently dismissed.

by LSUFreek.tsn on Sep 4, 2009 9:34 AM EDT reply actions

Wait a minute, miatay.

You are agreeing that the Boise State player started the whole thing, but you don’t think he should get the same penalty.

Should he get any penalty?

by Hippi-Kat on Sep 4, 2009 9:48 AM EDT reply actions

I’m old enough and honest enough to see that the Boise State player started the whole incident.

This isn’t hockey, where it’s normally the guy who retaliates gets punished.  Review the tape and punish both guilty parties.

by dtalbott on Sep 4, 2009 9:52 AM EDT reply actions

Dtalbott, respectfully, you are way off base.  What I am seeing you say is that that if I am walking down that street and talk trash to some guy and then he hits me I should go to jail for saying something to him?  Thats not how the world works sorry.  Yes the Boise guy started it but finishing it is always what gets you in trouble.  I do think that a punch by its self could be forgiven after a completion the rest of his behavior; dancing away like he just won a street fight when all he did was a cowardly sucker punch and then trying to attack fans and his own team mates then eventually having to be drug out by coaches, teammates, security, and the cops.  That doesn’t all fall on the Boise guy.  That is on a young man with a major anger problem that needs attention.

by smorrison2030 on Sep 4, 2009 9:59 AM EDT reply actions

Watch the whole video.

The Boise State guy smacks his shoulder pads, yells something in his face, one of the Boise State coaches grabs the player and spins him away, starts yelling at him, and then the punch was thrown.

Blount should definitely be slammed for his behavior, but I really want them to find out the "why" of what happened.  I’m curious on what was said.

dtalbott,  Now that I agree with.  I think they should find out what the Bosie guy did/said and if it was inflamitory sanction him in some way too maybe not as bad though.

by smorrison2030 on Sep 4, 2009 10:28 AM EDT reply actions

dtalbott- The reason Houtt slapped his pads and said something to him is because Blount talked smack all week about Boise State before the game. How you can put each players actions on the same plane is not only mind boggling, but troubling.

by Hippi-Kat on Sep 4, 2009 10:36 AM EDT reply actions

So Houtt showed poor sportsmanship, inflamed the situation, and got popped.

It all falls back to "just shut up and play."

by dtalbott on Sep 4, 2009 10:41 AM EDT reply actions

dtalbott – would you stop, PLEASE!  It doesn’t matter what the player said. Doesn’t matter on any day of the week.  IT was a punk move from the Oregon player and regardless of what WORDS came out of the Boise players mouth…it wasn’t enough to invite a sucker punch.  You see, part of growing up and being a man is restraint.  Words are words, but we now live in a society that has no backbone.  Words offend, I agree.  Words can hurt, I agree.  But words are just that and the proper retaliation would be to sit these two down and have a little school debate :)  Like the old days, you know where words were actually contemplated.

Furthermore, if we are to use your "he said something so should receive equal punishment"  Then the Oregon football team should have been punished prior to the game for all the yapping they did.  Maybe a good spanking on the hind quarters would have set them straight.

dtalbot,
If Blount was offended by Hout’s action and jawwing, he should have hit Hout on the shoulder pads and called his momma a cantankerous wh*re.  If Hout punched Blount in the mouth, then Blount would have been justified in hitting Hout.

Blount threw a clear sucker punch for all of the NCAA dignitaries to see on the open day of college football.   What will weigh heavily against Blount is his victory taunting after he threw the punch, the fact that he punched his own teammate in the face afterward and pulled himself away from a policeman and several security guards in an attempt to punch fans is the stadium!

Did Garrett Embry of the Ducks say something about Blount’s race or parentage?  Did the fan in the stand smack Blount’s shoulder pads ?

As for the same penalty, Hout is did not punch his own teammate, get escorted off of the field by cops or try to run into the stands to punch someone out.

We cannot control all of the things that happen to us, but we ARE in control of how we respond to the things that happen to us.

Watched the game, absolute sucker punch. Did he get ‘taunted’? Probably. But the result wasn’t just a sucker punch, it was a complete blowout requiring teammates and, it seems, even cops to quell. dtalbott.   Yes, I am at least not so partisan to be honest here.  Whatever the Boise State player said,  it was not enough for what followed.   But lets’ take it further.   Blount hit his owner player too and then started an altercation with fans.    Your zeal in covering for Blount shows me you are making excuses for him.     We don’t know what the Bronco player said but it is still NO excuse for hooliganism and Blount has proved himself to be a very nasty person.

dtalbott,

If you run smack all week, then be prepared to eat crow after the game should you lose.  Instead, he took the opportunity to sucker punch #94.  In my mind, case close.

I’m sure that the BSU coach will hold #94 accountable.

Blount is a loose cannon who needs to be let go.

‘Students’ like Legarette have no place on a college campus. The NFL needs a minor league system so that the Legarettes have a place to highlight their athletic talents while providing an opportunity for true student athletes to earn a scholarship. Over the last 25 years univesities have been overlooking felony convictions, low test scores and ‘character issues’ to ensure that they get the fastest, strongest athletes. Focusing on athletics without academics results in dangerous campuses and players who would be an embarassment to their respective universities but for the fact that they are athletes and everyone knows that they aren’t academically qualified to be at the university (take for example every Gerogetown basketball team over the last 20 years – yeah, they’d get into Georgetown on their test scores. lol)  If Legarette is talented enough to play in the NFL, he should be in the NFL or a minor league system. If he isn’t, he sure the heck doesn’t belong on a collee campus. A simple solution to the problem: hold anyone, including athletes who want to play sports to the same academic standards as the student body. That would certainly take care of the Legarettes and would likely result in a much more diverse (the altar at which all universities pray) athletics program. Hell, you might get an Asian running back. Or not.

Certainly the Boise State player said something to Blount.  Trash talk is an old occurance in sports, especially football.  If you can’t handle a litle trash talk, then you should not be playing.  Blount has certainly done plenty of it prior to the game and I would suspect durng the game.  When he did not win the game and some of that talk came back his way, he responded with sucker punches and then a totally out of control angry display.  Blount should not be playing at the college levevl again.  He has a history of outrageous inappropriate behavior and needs therapy.

by 74Sooner on Sep 4, 2009 12:28 PM EDT reply actions

Did Blount spend the offseason with Stephen Jackson?

I have difficulty taking the "ass-whupping" angle seriously.  Every team in a "revenge" game says that in the locker room, and it goes public a few times each year, but fights are rare.

A more likely culprit:  his decrepit 8 carries for (-5) yards.  I wonder if he would’ve gone ballistic if he had scored 3 TDs but lost 31-27.

That’s not an excuse:  selfishness and lack of discipline are two sides of the same coin.

As far as the Boise player goes:  whatever he said was like Miss Manners compared to the trash Blount will hear the rest of this season, now that every opponent knows he’s a ticking bomb.

by bveo12 on Sep 4, 2009 12:31 PM EDT reply actions

Dtalbott.   the Boise State coach went off on that player and rightfully so.  We can only imagine what was said specifically but I think no matter what was said,  Blount is a problem child.   The other player should be disciplined too, because he did instigate an escalation in an already unstabile player.   He Blount not made those comments prior to the game and had he not struck his own player and went after fans,  I might be more inclined to feel as you do.     Even his own teammate was shocked and angry at Blount.

by miatay on Sep 4, 2009 12:31 PM EDT reply actions

I agree with dtalbott’s follow-up commments.  His initial comment that the penalty shoudl be the same is going too far.  Blount should definitely get the far more severe penalty, but #94 is not blameless.  Getting in a guy’s face and making physical contact is over the line and he should sit for a game or two as well.

by tedchinook on Sep 4, 2009 12:31 PM EDT reply actions

Ted Yes!   But if the litmus test is getting in one’s face,  then 50% of the players would be suspended.   There are so many instances of this.   In fact, last night,  you could see players on both sides taunting.   This behavior invariably escalates into a kind of lawless that you saw last night. The Boise State coach was very judicious in his comments after the game.  He epitomizes what is right in sportsmanship and you can sure,  he went off on that Bronco player.

  1. Hout slapped Blount’s shoulder the same way he would have had Hout wanted to get Blount’s attention in order to tell him "Good Game."

So, #94’s "physical contact" is simply a non-issue.

It’s the taunting that deserves reprimand. But #94 already got more than a mouthful.

If throwing the ball in the air after a touchdown is a 15 yard penalty than a knockout punch to the jaw should be a half a season suspension.

Permanent dismissal. This goes beyond one punch.  He swung at his teammates, couldn’t be controlled by his coaches, and had to be escorted by Boise Police.  Bad play on his part.  Unfortunate actually, but he should have kept the arse wuppin’ comment to himself as well.

I’m amazed that people have the audacity to say he was somehow baited inot losing complete control of himself. If #94 did trashtalk and tap him on his shoulder pads, so be it. This happens all the time and honestly #04 was well w/in his right to talk trash. Blount had been talking to every new outlet that would listen on what the "Ducks" were going to do to Boise State.

It’s simple this young man lost all composure and went into a rage after being stifled in the backfield and beaten soundly. he attacked the opposing player, teammates, staff and anyone who happened to be in his way. His behavior was simply uncalled for and should be dealt with in a swift manner. I honestly think he should be suspended for the year and forced to seek some psychiatric counseling in order to keep his scholarship and enter into the NFL draft. He could be given a medical redshirt by the NCAA to help him regain his year lost. It would be a win/win for the NCAA and the young man also in an effort to help him in the future.

I’m not a Boise or Oregon fan, I’m a college football fan that has witnessed a complete meltdown by a young man that obviously needs help in controlling his emotiions and decision making.

How about you thump me on the ear and I crack your skull open with a baseball bat? Is suspending both of us the "right thing" to do? Didn’t think so.

Besides, the guy went after his own teammates. Also, who knows what kind of smack got talked by Blount during the game. I’m sure his per carry avg had him plenty bent out of shape with the BSU defense. Eight carries for a lousy minus five yards. And, if you look at the history of the Oregon RB and the decision made by Oregon’s HC to suspend him for the entire season, as well as his actions in total from the week leading up to the game and his postgame antics, you can easily see that the guy is a THUG. Stop acting like Blount was on his way to confession before no.94 slapped him on his shoulder pads. The guy is a walking billboard for what is wrong with college football and opinions like yours enable his kind of behavior. Fortunately, for all involved, sans Mr Blount and fans like you, his career at Oregon is over and we won’t have to listen to people attempt to condone his wretched behavior any longer.
