Four Tennessee Players Face Marijuana, Weapons Charges

Update, 9:25 PM: Now the News-Sentinel is saying there will be no felony charges filed.

Updates, mid-afternoon: The Knoxville News-Sentinel confirms the story, also mentioning that the charges are misdemeanors and the result of a traffic stop.

Their report also includes the following statement from Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl:

"We take these matters very seriously," UT coach Bruce Pearl said in a statement released by UT. "We are still gathering information. Once the appropriate authorities have provided us with all of the facts, we will act accordingly.”

Chattanooga Times-Press reporter Wes Rucker has more details on Twitter: There were two weapons, one with its serial number filed off -- a felony -- and an open container of alcohol. That felony charge, because the gun was under Smith's seat, will stick to Smith, at least at first.

And Rocky Top Talk notes that Tennessee's Rivals site has a full rundown of the charges, which include the filed weapon charges for both Smith and Williams.

Original: Tennessee's football team ended 2009 rather poorly last night by going scoreless in the second half of the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Their men's hoops team is beginning 2010 in even worse fashion: According to a Knoxville radio host, four players have been arrested for marijuana and and weapons possession.

From the Twitter of "AnimalHeather," part of The Sports Animal (WNAL-AM) in Knoxville, sic implied:

Just confirmed from KPD officials four UT mens basketball players arrested on marajuana possession charges and weapons charges

KPD source confirmed the players are Melvin Goins, Tyler Smith, Cameron Tatum and Brian Williams... #volsarrested

We'll update as more details emerge.

Show me a college basketball player who doesn’t smoke an occasional joint nowadays. It’s just that the majority of them don’t get caught, or the local authorities don’t publicize the arrests. As to the gun charge, they were hoping to be drafted by the Washington Wizards. Go Vols!
