Orrin Hatch hasn't kept his hate for the BCS any sort of secret. He urged President Barack Obama to investigate the BCS back in October. Now he's written a letter to President Obama asking him to invite both Boise State and Alabama to the White House:
In the coming months, as you engage in the time-honored tradition of inviting the champions of major sports leagues to visit the White House, you will have an opportunity to honor the best teams and athletes in the country. I write today to respectfully suggest that the Boise State University football team be included among this year's invitees. The end of another college football season has brought with it a new set of controversies surrounding the Bowl Championship series (BCS). The BCS has crowned the University of Alabama – an excellent football team, no doubt deserving of the honor and attention they’ve received as – national champions. However, as you know, the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) has yet to institute a playoff system to decide its national championship, leaving fans to speculate whether more than one team is worth of the sport's top honor, particularly in those years, like this one, when more than one team finishes the season undefeated. In 2009, Boise State's football team had its third undefeated regular season in five years and, on January 4, 2010, capped its season with a Fiesta Bowl victory over a very good and highly-rankled team from Texas Christian University. Indeed, as Senator James Risch recently wrote to you, "the BSU football team showed the country that they are true champions." Yet, even with its perfect season and long track record of success, Boise State was not given an opportunity to play for the national championship.
You can read the full letter here in PDF form.
Yahoo's Dan Wetzel proposed the same thing back on Jan. 5 and it would be a true eye-opener. (Whether it should be a major concert of the President is another matter.) That being said, if he wants to follow through on that "throw his weight around" claim regarding the BCS, this is his chance.

Isn’t it great to see your tax dollars at work on such important matters? Maybe they can set up that little "fight resolution" table, you know the one they used for the professor and the cop, on the lawn and everyone can share a beer and an anecdote – and not accomplish sh!t.
Rather, I’d like to put BS and Utah on our schedule home and away for the next 5 years and make these stupid conversations go away. Next year alone we have Penn State in September and Florida in October, who does BS play next year? Right.

Hey, I’ve got it- let’s invite every team that won a bowl game and all get together with the head cheerleadeer and sing Kumbaya. And while you are at it how about the winners of 1AA, Division II and Division III. What a great sing-a-long that could be.
And onebamaman, I’ll be impressed when you have Penn State in late November on your schedule instead of a cupcake. What an impressive schedule it was this year. Yes you played Virginia TEch, but the rest of them were Florida International, North Texas St, and Chattanooga. Don’t throw stones at Boise when you live in that glass house.

Eyes this makes a second time you’ve accused me without cause -
Alabama ’09 SOS #5
BS ’09 SOS #83
No glass house my friend – that whole SEC sos argument is largely without merit. Still, clearly it won’t fly here. Penn State comes to Tuscaloosa in September, I’m not sure what month (and I don’t care, we’ll take ’em anytime) we play them on the flip side in ’11.

So, should all seven teams which got hosed by the BCS get invitations to the White House?

I would like to see my senators get my money back from all those fat cat Wall Street friends of theirs who get millions of dollars in bonus’ even if they kill the company.
IT IS JUST A GAME SENATOR!!!
Unlike giving money to knuckleheads who just want more corporate welfare.
Give me a freakin’ break.

If I was Boise State, I would decline the invite until I unquestionly earn it. The presser with them in attendence would look pathetic.

ask any psu fan why the president should stay the F$%K out of college football.
hint: one more reason to dislike nixon.

Wait just a minute. I’ve had enough of this Boise State bull. These guys play 12 cupcakes every year, one "tough" team and now expect to get a BCS invitation? Gimme a break.
If all of Div 1 followed that example, what a mess.
Sure Boise played well against TCU…this year. Last year they lost to them.
Also, you know why other big name schools don’t play Boise. The stupid spud eaters like to claim the bigguns are afraid of Boise. Not so, Boise demands $1million to come to your stadium. Who would pay that kinda dough.

First of all, Boise shouldn’t even be allowed in D-1 football untill they get a proper field.
Second, Mr Hatch….Get back to work putz!

I applaud your team for even playing VT this year and Penn St next year. But what I am looking for is them or ANY SEC team to play PSU, Michigan, or even Boise St at their place in November. The SEC just doesn’t cross the Mason Dixon after October 1.
And gatork, what would it take for Florida to go to Boise in November and play on the blue carpet? I sould feel safe in betting it is a lot more than $1 million if you could ever get them to even do it. That is the SEC hypocrisy that I am talking about.

Eyes,
I just read this today and had to share it:
November 4, 1922 - The Crimson Tide gets a 9-7 win against the John Heisman-coached Penn team during a regular season game in Philadelphia. Teams from the Ivy League conference dominated college football at the time (and since its inception), and the win garnered the Crimson Tide more recognition above the Mason-Dixon Line. from – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alabama_Crimson_Tide_football
There you go, a game north of the Mason-Dixon line in November – a win no less..;)
I think the whole aversion to cold weather thing is a myth – still, I wouldn’t ever care to see my beloved Crimson Tide play on a BS blue carpet. – that thing should be illegal.

Here’s a little info. for the discussion. Next year Boise St. plays both Oregon St. and Virginia Tech. They are trying to schedule tough teams.I’m not saying they deserve a co-championship or a White House visit, but they are trying. Personally, I don’t see a need to invite any team to the White House. When did this silly tradition start? Think about the money involved.

I don’t see a "hypocracy" here. Big 10 schools are in full confrence play in Oct/Nov. They aren’t going to schedule an SEC team that time of year themselves. It is a two way street…

Hey Gator K,
If Florida’s can play games against Troy, Charleston, Florida International, or Alabama’s games against North Texas and Chattanooga, why can’t Boise State play UC Davis?
And don’t give me that "SEC is the toughest conference in the country" garbage either because is was darn sure a down season for them. LSU struggled, Tennessee was weak, Georgia was nowhere near what they normally are, Arkansas is rebuilding, Auburn is a year away, and Florida and Ole Miss nowhere near lived up to the hype.
I for one would LOVE to see a Big Ten vs. SEC Week in September where the Champs would play each other, the two second place teams play, and so on, and so on…
In my mind, Boise State fears no team, but its interesting how they can’t schedule a game. As for that cash argument, do a home and home! I think big teams won’t come to Boise because its a small stadium where they won’t make money.
As for the politicians, can they PLEASE just go away???
by fan82 on Jan 17, 2010 10:23 AM EST reply actions
Section 28, in the Army we referred to you guys as section 8, not 28. :) If you look at the schedules this year, every Big Ten team played an out of conference game after October 15. Most of them were supposed to be breathers, but the chance to get Florida or Alabama or LSU in temperatures under 40 would fill a stadium in the Big Ten. And bamaman I hope you were trying to be funny going back over 85 years for the last time that an SEC team played north of the Mason Dixon in the last half of the season.

Theeyeshaveit,
Bwhahaha…thought of that all by yourself hu?
Fact is the Big Ten does schedule cupcakes in late October…You can spin it all you want, it takes two to tango and these conferences ain’t dancing that late in the season. I refer you to Texas and USC playing early in Columbus….I’m sure they would love to get these "warm weather" schools up there North of the M/D in November….Oh wait….
