Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - D'Andre Bell led five players in double-figures with 16 points, as 22nd-ranked Georgia Tech earned a 79-58 win over ACC rival Wake Forest at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
Gani Lawal donated 14 points and nine rebounds, while Brian Oliver poured in 13 points for Georgia Tech (15-5, 4-3 ACC), which was able to regroup after suffering a 68-66 loss to conference foe Florida State on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets have won four of their last six. Derrick Favors had a well-rounded game with 11 points, nine boards and five blocks in the win.
Al-Farouq Aminu finished with 15 points and eight rebounds for Wake Forest (14-5, 4-3), which was coming off impressive wins over North Carolina and Virginia. The Demon Deacons have split their last six games overall. Ishmael Smith chipped in with 12 points and five steals, but committed five costly turnovers in defeat.
Wake Forest set the pace in the early going, taking a 17-10 lead six minutes into the contest after a Tony Woods layup. Then trailing by five, Lawal's dunk started a Georgia Tech 11-2 run over the next several minutes and Iman Shumpert's 1-of-2 effort from the free-throw line put the Yellow Jackets in front 26-22 with 6:18 left in the half.
Georgia Tech closed the opening 20 minutes out strong and took a 35-29 lead into the locker room.
The Demon Deacons came out for the second half and scored the first four points to make it a one-point game, but Georgia Tech quickly responded. Bell's four free throws book-ended a 19-2 run to put the hosts up by a commanding 54-35 advantage with just under 12 minutes play.
Georgia Tech maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
The Yellow Jackets have won four of the last five meetings, but Wake Forest still leads the all-time series with a 35-33 record...Shumpert finished with 11 points, five rebounds and two steals.
