Update: Daly: I Never Said I Was Retiring

We were hesitant to classify John Daly's "I'm done" remark as a retirement announcement. Apparently, Daly agrees. Early Friday morning, Daly explained his comments on Twitter:

never said retirement in anything or twitter-i want to correct that! simply sayin I need my time & working through these bad times thank you

His next few tweets offered some insight into what Daly is going through.

To ALL my Fans---my financial situation is putting me where I cannot focus on my game, I'm putting too much pressure on myself, the few sponsors that I have are great but it's not getting me thru these times--i want to thank my fans throughout all these years & I don't like to continue to embarass myself-- maybe my mind may change down the road but right now i don't have the money to be on the tour. My game has never been the same since my rib injury during the Honda Classic in 2007. God Bless! JD

His troubles on the course, then, seem to stem from physical ailments and financial difficulties. Daly is out of the Farmer's Insurance Open, but we don't know for sure when he'll tee it up next.

John Daly: 'I'm Done' With Golf

In an interview with the Golf Channel, golfer John Daly said Friday that he's withdrawing from the Farmer's Insurance Open after a poor start. But he didn't stop there. The 43-year-old veteran says he is finished with professional golf.

In an interview with Golf Channel following his second-round 71 at the North Course at Torrey Pines today, John Daly told a producer that he's done with golf.

[...] Now, Daly wasn't necessarily specific about his plans; rather, he was obviously disappointed about his play this week and didn't hold back in the interview. That's nothing new. If anything, his emotion fell right in line with other episodes he's had on the golf course long before his weight loss.

Of course, this is not a formal retirement announcement, and it's quite possible that the mercurial golfer is simply exhibiting his frustration. As soon as we find out how serious Daly really is, we'll come back with an update.
