Comparing Big East Résumés

This afternoon, I want to take a look at the résumés of two teams who share a conference. In terms of selection, one is widely regarded as having a stronger case than the other, but both happened to lose their noon tipoffs.

Team A

Overall: 13-8
Conference: 4-4
Last 12: 7-5
Road/Neutral Record: 2-5
Avg. RPI win: 142
Record against RPI 1-50: 1-6
Record against RPI: 51-100: 2-3
Record against RPI: 101-200: 7-0
Record against RPI: 201+: 2-0

Team B

Overall: 13-8
Conference: 3-5
Last 12: 6-6
Road/Neutral Record: 1-6
Avg. RPI win: 118
Record against RPI 1-50: 1-5
Record against RPI: 51-100: 6-2
Record against RPI: 101-200: 4-1
Record against RPI: 201+: 2-0

It's clear that both of these teams are clearly on the bubble, but quite a few bracketologists have a higher view of Team B than Team A.

Team A is Louisville, who fell at West Virginia this afternoon, while Team B is Connecticut, who lost at home to Marquette, their second loss since their huge upset win over Texas a week ago.

That victory is key to one of the main differences in the two profiles. The Huskies and Cardinals both have one win over the RPI top 50. However, UConn's came against the Longhorns (currently 9th in the RPI), while Louisville's came against Cincinnati (49th). That helps UConn's, along with a superior record against teams ranked from 51-100.

Both teams have 10 Big East contests (and the conference tournament) to improve their résumés. The biggest of these may be Monday night, as the two meet at Freedom Hall.
