After considering the Rockies and Nationals, free agent shortstop Orlando Cabrera has settled on the Reds:
CINCINNATI -- A Major League source told MLB.com late Saturday that the Reds agreed to terms with free-agent shortstop Orlando Cabrera on a one-year, $3 million contract.
The deal includes a $3 million option for 2011 that carries a $1 million buyout. The Reds have not confirmed the deal, and it was not yet known if it was a player or club option on the contract.
Cabrera, it would appear, will get the nod over the 27 year old Paul Janish, an elite-level defensive infielder who's struggled to hit against advanced competition. Janish has hit a combined .226 against AAA and Major League pitching with little power, and though his glove is a known asset, Cincinnati executives have determined that Cabrera offers the superior overall package.
