The Toronto Maple Leafs have dropped a bomb on the NHL world this Sunday morning, acquiring struggling defenseman Dion Phaneuf from the Calgary Flames. As of now, there is no word on who could be going in the other direction in the deal.
The trade was first reported by Darren Dreger of TSN, who is now reporting on Twitter that the return in the deal could be huge.
when asked if Stajan and Hagman are main pieces in Phaneuf trade, source says "its bigger than that."
Could we be seeing a three way deal? Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register is reporting that goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere could be headed to Toronto in exchange for Leafs goaltender Vesa Toskala.
The Ducks are set to trade Jean-Sebastien Giguere, the franchise’s all-time winningest goalie, to the Toronto Maple Leafs and it’s expected they will receive goalie Vesa Toskala and another player in return, the Orange County Register has learned.
For now, all we know for sure is that Phaneuf is a Maple Leaf.
It was just earlier this month that Calgary general manager Darryl Sutter said he would not be trading his prized defenseman. From Canwest back on January 8...
"Everything is false," Sutter said of the rampant rumours surrounding his 24-year-old defenceman. "Whoever makes up that stuff is not doing anything. We've worked really hard at building a top young defence in the league and our intention is to keep them so that's just from somebody who didn't have anything to do on that day."
Defense is certainly an asset the Flames have plenty of, with Jay Bouwmeester and Robyn Regehr on the blueline and now Mark Giordano coming into his own. Apparently, Sutter must have had a change of heart and felt that Phaneuf was expendable, especially considering he hasn't performed up to snuff this season.
The Flames are in desperate need of scoring. as they rank just 22nd in the NHL with 2.54 goals per game.
