We were already potentially looking at a loaded field for the 2010 Slam Dunk Contest, assuming LeBron James follows through on his promise to take part in the competition. But if Dominique Wilkins gets his way, things could get way more awesome.
The former Hawks great and current Hawks color commentator is lobbying for current Hawk Josh Smith, the winner of the 2005 Dunk Contest, to return to the competition this time around. Wilkins told Chris Tomasson of Fanhouse that he's going to have a little talk with Smith to try to make it happen.
"I'm going to talk to him,'' Wilkins said in an interview with FanHouse. "I would love to see him be in it. I think he would make a nice comeback and take the contest again by doing something a little different. ... I hope (the chances are) good (of Smith competing).''
When asked about Wilkins' comments, Smith said he'd think about it and added that he'd be more interested if James was competing too. Regardless, Smith doesn't lack for confidence.
If Smith were to dunk again, he believes he would win regardless of the opposition.
"I would say me because I'm confident in myself,'' Smith said.
Seriously, how awesome would it be if we got James, Smith, Dwight Howard and Nate Robinson to be the four competitors? Hell, I'd be happy with James, Smith, Howard and any token rookie (DeMar Derozan? Rodrigue Beaubois? Chase Budinger? BLAKE GRIFFIN?). Just make it happen guys. Please.
