Coming off an impressive two-game debut with the U.S. National Team, Jermaine Jones has torn one ankle ligament and hurt his other while playing for his German pro team Schalke '04.
It was hoped that Jones would be able to provide the U.S. with some help in the central midfield during the World Cup, but he was unable to recover from an earlier shin injury in time.
This latest setback will almost certainly mean that he won't be available for the Nov. 17 friendly in South Africa.
The injury occurred during Schalke's Tuesday victory over FSV Frankfurt in the German Cup and he was removed in the 77th minute.
Jones had an up and down game in his U.S. debut against Poland. He had an assist on Jozy Altidore's goal, but also had a turnover that lead to Poland's equalizer in that game. Jones seemed to be a good pairing with fellow central midfielder Michael Bradley.
