Elena Dementieva Retires From Tennis To Start A Family
The 2008 Olympic women's tennis champion, Elena Dementieva, announced her retirement last week. The 29-year-old Russian shocked the tennis world with her announcement, as she is one of the top players over the last decade to never win a grand slam.
In 2009, Dementieva made it to the semifinals of both the Australian Open and Wimbledon. The last year she made it to a grand slam final was in 2004 for the French Open and U.S. Open.
Recently engaged to Russian hockey player Maxim Afinogenov, which facts about have been kept quiet by Dementieva, the tennis star said one main reason for her early exit from the tennis courts is that she wants to start a family. "It was a very difficult and emotional [decision] but if I decided to quit that was it," Dementieva said. "I'm not coming back."
