Melvin Mora Signs Two-Year Contract With Diamondbacks

Stay connected with SB Nation

Earlier Monday morning, the Diamondbacks cleared some payroll space by pulling a Mark Reynolds trade with the Orioles. And they wasted little time in filling the hole at third base, reportedly signing free agent infielder Melvin Mora to a two-year contract.

The contract will be worth $4 million, and will give Mora a raise from the $1.275 million he made as a member of the Orioles and Rockies in 2010.

Mora will turn 39 next February, but is coming off a season that saw him post strong numbers, batting .285 with a .358 OBP over 113 games. He also played four different positions, gaining value for his versatility. He is not a great player and would be better utilized off the bench, but he's an adequate stopgap, and he's likely to command some trade interest from contenders at the deadline.
