The Nets Can't Even Do Motivational Speakers Right

The New Jersey Nets' chances at a .500 record may have gone up in smokes with last night's loss to Philadelphia, but don't tell me the Nets have quit this season. Teams that quit don't hire motivational speakers to help their team, goddammit!

However, as with everything involving the Nets this year, this particular motivational speaker, Joachim de Posada, failed. Posada, a friend of assistant coach Del Harris and a relative of Yankees catcher Jorge Posada who markets himself as "an internationally acclaimed bilingual (English/Spanish) motivational Hispanic/Latino speaker," was trying to show the Nets that pain is all mental. To prove his point, Posada stuck a needle in his face, and was prepared to do more until the Nets stopped him.

The Nets were all pretty disturbed, but I for one think that's pretty original. At the same time, considering the audience, this would have been more appropriate.

Comment about motivational speaker

Dear Mr. Prada: The needle demonstration was about 5 minutes out of three sessions with the team lasting from 20 minutes to 90 minutes. What was important was to discuss working as a team, doing the best you can, not giving up, going the extra mile etc. This is a very young team, look at the starting roster and with very little experience. I think that lately they have been doing a good job. They beat the Clippers, lost against the Wizards by 2 points, it could have gone either way and then lost a game against Philly that could have been tied with 26 seconds left. Unfortunately, Jarvis Hayes missed after having played a hell of a game. So, I don’t think I have failed at all. I think I was able to give the team a few good ideas and Kiki and Del and all the other coaches will continue to work with the team until they get better. Next time, call me up and hear the whole story before condemming an effort without having all the facts. Regars, Joachim de Posada
