If you've seen The Cutting Edge, you know skating glory don't come cheap. Turns out, neither does any other sort of Winter Olympic notoriety:
If you’re intent on seeing your son’s or daughter’s mug on a Wheaties Box, be prepared to spend. Most Olympic sports, including speed skating, offer funding through the sport’s national organization and the USOC for the elite athletes once they make the national team. But as far as getting there, most are on their own.
Tabs for a young downhill skiier can run as high as $30,000 a year; for a cross-country skiier, a mere $8,000 will be enough to train on. Hey, know what's apparently a real bargain? Curling!
(Is curling killing it tonight, or what?)
