As the Kentucky Wildcats prepare to travel to Mississippi tonight, Kentucky's superstar center Demarcus Cousins says he's been bombarded with taunting phone calls from Mississippi State fans. And since we're talking about stupid college students, of course there have been racist and homophobic slurs sent his way:
In addition to the witty gay commentary, Cousins has also dealt with the racial slurs. "They just showing their ignorance," he said.
Cousins, who talks about the calls here, said he's been called the n-word, the b-word, and probably whatever else you can imagine coming from a bunch of Mississippi State frat stars. And much to his credit, it seems as though he's taken the harassment with a measure of good humor. Probably the best way to go.
A simple choice, really: he could shrug this off and dominate Mississippi State tonight, or... he could keep it real. But that could go wrong.

Yeah, if there's one thing we Mississippians love, it's
bigotry and homophobia.
Give it a rest. We’re not you’re damned whipping boys, America. I know these rogue State fans aren’t doing us any favors, but to denounce everyone from the Manolia State as prejudiced is a bit, well, prejudiced, don’t you think?

If someone said that fans from Mississippi were a harassing a famous athlete...
…would you be even a tiny bit surprised to hear it involved racial or homophobic slurs?
That was my only point.

I can't say that I, a person who grew up in Mississippi, would find it surprising at all
but being vicariously labelled a racist homophobe chaps my ass a little. I don’t think I’m wrong to think that way.

But it's more of a non-issue than I'm letting it be.
