Danica Patrick: Why the hype? Well ...

I hate Danica Patrick she is getting all the media attention and everyone else is getting ignored.  Why has there been so much media attention on Danica Patrick anyway?

Well because she's a female Indy car driver trying to break into the world of stock cars and people are interested.

So?  What about all of the other female stock car drivers out there that raced in the ARCA Series and in the Nationwide Series last weekend?  Why isn't there a ton of media coverage about them?

Because the public demand isn't as big for them as it is for Danica.

Wait, are you saying they're not as good as Danica Patrick?  Well let me tell you ...

No that's not what I said, I said the public demand isn't as strong for them as it is for Danica.  The fans are the driving force behind Danica-mania, not the fact that she may or may not be a better driver than anyone else, male or female for that matter.

OK ... so you're saying that Danica isn't a good driver and that this whole Danica-mania thing is media driven?

Man you are dense.  No I'm not saying she isn't a good driver, you can't win an Indy race by being an 'also ran' and I'm sure that she'll eventually adjust just fine to 'closed' wheel racing when she has a little more experience.

And as far as Danica-mania being media driven, well I guess it could be to an extent but you must remember the media is only writing about things that think we're interested in.

I mean let's face it a Danica story, even a crummy one like this, is going to get more attention than a story about the history of a lug nut.  You watch as soon as I post this story my sitemeter numbers are going to increase significantly compared to yesterday you know why?  Because there is a demand for Danica information out there by the fans, not by media.  The media in this case is just an extension of the fans demand for more Danica.

Sooo ... you're just writing this to get hits aren't you?

Huh?  If I were in this to get the hits I would have posted Danica's Sports Illustrated pictures everyday for the entire month leading up to the Daytona 500.  No. I'm writing this to say that Danica-mania is driven by the fans and nothing else, so get over it.

It was people like you that created this, not her, not ARCA, not NASCAR, not Dale Jr., not the sponsors and certainly not the media.

Now granted all of the above are benefiting from Danica-mania.  I heard that the viewing audience for the last ARCA race was up 60% compared to last year's race.  That's significant, and that was because Danica was in the race and it was you, the race fan, that tuned in to watch the race, not the media or anyone else.  You.  And of course everyone benefits by having her in the race because more people watching means more money generated for everyone involved from the media to the track promoters and everyone in-between.

Oh.  I guess you're right ... but what about those Sports Illustrated and FHM photos and kind of sexy GoDaddy commercials?  Isn't she just self promoting herself?

Well OK, she is doing a bit of self promotion for sure but she's creating a 'brand' of herself that you, the fan, wants.  If the demand wasn't there do you think she would be doing those things?  No.

Now granted she might be feeding the fans interest in her, but if there were no interest in the first place then she wouldn't be doing it and certainly if she didn't have any talent driving a car then there really would be no fan interest in her.  Period.

Alright then Mr. Smarty Pants answer this; If she is such a great driver then why was she in two crashes on Saturday?

Did you watch the race?  Really.  Did you actually watch it?  Certainly she was involved in the accidents but they were not caused by her, they were caused by someone else and she, like many others, was a victim of circumstance.  Even the great Dale Earnhardt Jr was involved in a serious wreck on Saturday.

Oh ya, well I don't think she's that good looking you know.  So try to explain that!  Betcha can't!

Oh man, you're hopeless!  Get over it, you just can't lose a discussion even when you know you're wrong.  No matter what Danica does there will always be people like you to put her down.  It's the nature of the beast I guess.  A brick wall is softer than your head I'm afraid so I'll just stop trying to hammer some sense into it now.  It must be awful to live life with such a narrow mind.
