Lindsey Vonn Wins Women's Downhill Gold, Mancuso Takes Silver

American Lindsey Vonn has won gold in the Women's Downhill, the first such medal for the United States in the event.

Julia Mancuso, from Squaw Valley, Calif., won the silver medal. Austria's Elisabeth Goergl took the bronze. It is the first time ever that Americans finished 1-2 in the Women's Downhill. Overall, it marks just the third time that two Americans have won gold and silver in an Olympic Alpine Skiing race, and the first time in 26 years.

Shortly after the race, Vonn told reporters, "This is the best thing that's happened to me in my life. It's awesome." It is the first Olympic medal won by the Minnesota native.

Vonn could not have asked for a better day, with incredible weather and sunshine blanketing a downhill course that many consider to be the most difficult ever in women's downhill Olympic competition. She did not seem intimidated, however, as she attacked the mountain with confidence, beating everyone else down by more than a half-second.

Lindsey Vonn, and the rest of the women's skiers, are back in action tomorrow for the Super-Combined, an event that is one downhill run in the morning, followed by a slalom run later in the day. Fastest time wins.
