American Shani Davis showed why he was the overwhelming favorite in Men's Speed Skating 1000.
Skating in the last group of the evening, Davis knew exactly what he needed to do to earn gold, and then went out and did just that. Davis defended his gold medal from the 2006 Games with a time of 1:08.94, just 0.18 seconds ahead of South Korea's Mo Tae-Bum (the gold medalist in the 500m).
Davis' teammate Chad Hedrick won the bronze, finishing in 1:09.32. It is Hedrick's fourth career Olympic medal, after winning three in Torino: gold in the 5000m, silver in the 10,000m and bronze in the 1500m.
Shani Davis becomes the first ever to win back-to-back gold medals in the Men's 1000m.
The gold and bronze won in the 1000m were the first two medals won by American Speed Skaters at the Vancouver Games. It is traditionally one of the country's most successful sports.
