Despite two early penalties and a barrage of Canadian pressure, Switzerland was able to hold off the Canadian attack through the first nine minutes of play. Through a mix of heavy pressure on the penalty kill and excellent goaltending from Jonas Hiller, they stifled the potent Canadians. That didn't last for long, though.
The red-clad Canadian fans at BC Hockey Place rained 'Hilllllerrrrrrr, Hillllllerrrrr' chants down on the Swiss goaltender and maybe the enthusiasm rubbed off on their team. Jonathan Toews dug the puck out from along the end boards behind the Swiss net and threw it to Patrick Marleau positioned along the side of the net. Marleau than shifted it over to his San Jose Sharks line mate Dany Heatley who put one by Hiller top open the scoring. 1-0 Canada.
