Dale Jr.: Why I Won't Tweet

Count me among those who haven't quite understood why Dale Earnhardt Jr. – as tech-savvy as he is – has yet to embrace social networking.

Earnhardt Jr.'s presence on Facebook and Twitter are either fan pages run by his public relations representatives or fakes. In other words, he doesn't use it.

A reporter asked why on Friday and Earnhardt Jr. gave his most comprehensive answer yet.

In short: He can't keep up with it and doesn't want to anger his fans with infrequent updates.

The bottom line is, he said, is if a non-celebrity decided not to keep up with social networking any more, it wouldn't be as big of a deal as if Dale Earnhardt Jr. decided to stop tweeting.

"Say if it was Jeff or somebody who wanted to shut his Twitter account down, some people would be upset, but that's his prerogative," he said, looking in my direction. "If I start something like that, it just steamrolls and it's out of my control. I just don't think it's productive really, to have a personal social networking account."

It sounds like the closest you'll be able to get to Earnhardt Jr. information is to follow his PR reps (@mikedavis88 and @laura_scott88) and his spotter/friend T.J. Majors (@tjmajors).

Even though Earnhardt Jr. stays up until all hours of the night playing video games against people from all over the country, he doesn't feel like he can commit to social networking.

And if he can't do it right, he doesn't want to do it at all.

"I had Facebook and MySpace and all that way back in the day, and I just get burned out feeling that responsibility to keep it updated," he said. "You know, what for? You gotta get out of the house every once in awhile.

"I just had to cut it all out. It was like I was a parent having to take care of this thing."

Personally, I think Earnhardt Jr. is overestimating the time it takes to update a Twitter page. Even if he did it once every few days, I think most of his fans would be happy.

But it's a personal choice, and he doesn't want to do it. That's really all that matters.
