On Friday, Tiger Woods held a press conference to announce how sorry he was over his infidelity issues. Ryan Ballengee of our golf blog, Waggle Room, echoes my reaction precisely:
Tiger's apology today is like some stranger walking up to me in a bar and apologizing for cheating on his wife. What a happy hour buzzkill that would be. Nothing like having a stranger reveal embarrassing and sad details about their life.
In his remarks, Tiger noted that he let down his fans, and from a certain perspective, this is true. After all, as a consequence of his infidelity and the toll it's taken on him, we're not going to be able to watch him play golf for a while.
As Ballengee touched on, though, Tiger apologized for his moral shortcomings because an apology is standard protocol. It's hard to say exactly who or what perpetuates this protocol, but I'm pretty sure it isn't the fans.
