The Recession: The College Football Fan's Best Friend

Whether they're known as "guarantee" games or "body bag" games or, to Big Ten fans, "MACrifices", fans know nonconference games in which a small school comes in for a paycheck and a beating by one word: boring. Scan the blogosphere every fall for an array of rants about ridiculous nonconference scheduling that no one on earth has ever disagreed with.

The laws of free-market economics don't care, though, and thus have doomed fans of every program to regular games in which the opponent has little or no chance. Longtime holdout Michigan decided if it was going to play a I-AA team, it was going to be a really good I-AA team. Everyone knows how that worked out. But instead of going back to a I-A-only policy, Michigan just downgraded the level of opposition. Last year they played Delaware State. This year they've got UMass. Even Notre Dame is downgrading its easy games from match-ups against the likes of Stanford, Washington State, and various service academies to the Western Michigans of the world. The race to the bottom is ruthless.

But where the rules of economics take, they also give. With attendance slipping and small schools asking for increasingly exorbitant payouts...

Navy will receive an eye-popping $1 million for playing at Ohio State for the first time since 1931.

"I think $1 million is going to be the market price in the coming years," Ohio State athletics director Gene Smith (pictured) says.

Arkansas State has signed for $1 million payouts from Auburn next season and Virginia Tech in 2011. This season, the Sun Belt Conference team has guarantee games against Nebraska for $750,000 and Iowa for $900,000.

...punching a bunny in the nose three times a year starts to make less and less sense.

That's one reason the Pac-10, which has more attendance issues than other big conferences, added a ninth game a few years ago. It's a reason the Big Ten keeps making noises about a ninth conference game despite its mathematical impossibility. And it's a reason that Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds is making noises about a ninth Big 12 game (and more Big 12 basketball games) when not batting away Big Ten expansion speculation:

"I'd rather play more conference games," Dodds said. "We don't have enough votes for that. We wouldn't be buying so many games."

Dodds said he has trotted out the idea "a couple of times. Hadn't had much success. They know where we stand. Sometimes programs get down and want to play games where they can win more games. Those votes will always be against adding."

Bowl eligibility is the hangup here. Going 3-6 against the Big 12 is a lot harder than going 2-6 when you're Baylor. Even so, as the economic equation shifts from epic 63-point beatings to "competitive games" people "want to see played," the chances that the first few weeks of the college football season are less bereft of meaningful games improve. Thanks, subprime mortgages!

In this article the service academies are referenced twice. A service academy has beaten ND 3 times in the last 3 years (2 Navy, 1 AF). Look for Ohio St to be backing out of their tentative commitment to play Navy again in 2014 after their scare last year, Western Kentucky instead? Sometimes the bunny is the one that is punching.

A love the fact that to sell this article, the author finds it necessary to put Urban’s picture up as the poster boy for slaughtering sacrificial lambs.  In fact, despite an occasional tuneup game, the Florida SOS is consistently top ten.  One of our "cuopcakes" every year is FSU.  Now, lately they haven’t been tough, but usually they are ranked.  Hardly the same as playing the MAC.  We also frequently play in a conference championship game- always a highly ranked opponent.  When playing 13, or 14 games, 10 or more of which are ranked at some point of the season, so what if one or two are called Troy, or La Tech?  In fact, I will compare our alleged cupcakes to those of other power conferences anytime.

Give it a rest I have never seen Florida play a team west of the Missippi or north of the Mason Dixon Line in Regular season and I am 47. , Home and Home.  They played 1 top 20 team in regular season last year that would be LSU. Yes Alabama was the #1 team last year which they played in the SEC championship game and lost. Georgia, Tennessee South Carolina , Missippi State none are top 20. Remeber nobody cares if they were top 20 when the season starts it’s when the season ends. They will play no=one Home and Home out of conference except Fla. State. they pay for at least two  to three victories per year.  They have to play Florida State Home and Home due to a state Law.  They had Miami  home and home about ten years ago, which was quickly dropped.  Utah offered to play Florida Home and Home last year and Florida pussied out.

Check out the Florida- Citidal highlites on the Colllege Football home page.  No wonder Tebow broke all the Rushing touchdown records. Citidale players cant get off a block. Just rediculous.  Hershel Walker didnt have it so easy. Notice to difference between Alabama’s defense and Citidal.

Exactly right SECOVERRATED!  I’d love to have seen Florida and Tebow try that chest pumping crap against Rey Rey, Cush, Mays, and Matthews!  I’ve always said it, had USC been allowed to play Florida they would have crushed them.

You never hear SEC fans debate the opposite.  Instead they will argue USC lost to Oregon St…..but never mention losing to Ol’Miss….

There is a reason USC guys are tearing it up in the NFL….

Come out west Florida and prove me wrong.

Florida and Meyer probably don’t go out of the region because the team’s parole officers won’t allow it.

 - SUB-PRIME MORTGAGES -

Brian,

LOL!
Yup, the subprime mortgage fiasco sure made a mess.  That and the other credit default swap investments that were/are the invention of the Wall Street gurus has nearly collapsed our economy.  And the geniuses are still at it!  Look what they have done regarding Greece’s potential loan defaults.  It’s like taking out fire insurance on your neighbor’s house!  If it burns down, you win!

(My apologies for diverging off topic!)

I rather enjoy the cupcakes, it gives me a chance to buy cheaper tickets and actually go to a game.  $50 for directional Michigan is a nice break from the $200 you pay for LSU or UT.

Florida doesn’t need to play anyone outside of the South, they always have one of the top overall schedules.  It would be stupid to make your team travel cross country when there is no need.  Some of you won’t be happy unless UF plays NFL teams and even then you would probably say, oh, it was the Bucs, still can’t leave the state.

Due to SC’s disappearing act since they found out they can’t Pay their players, SG & secoverrated have been relegated to perusing SEC threads and attempting to get bloggers to talk about their teams… pathetic really.SEC currently holds the Football, Baseball NC’s and Kentucky may bring home the Basketball Championship.  USC… thank God for Water Polo!Look at the bright side Sailor, this would be a great time for sanctions against your team… because without a TV contract and playing in the Emerald Snack Nuts Bowl (sic) nobody’s really watching, anyway.  And Sailor, stop sounding like a ****… with the if we played the SEC we could do this or that.  All you have to do is make it to the NCG and we’ll be there. Do yourself a favor and stop being "that guy", you sound like such a D-Bag!Fight On!!

Come on Flower House. I like how you say thier teams . I understand Sailor’s team is USC but you have no idea who my favorite team is. Your just shoot’n from the hip. The artical is about scheduling non-conference opponets, nothing else. Last time I checked airplanes fly from California to Ohio. I have never seen the Gators fly to Ohio. or Michigan or California or Texas or any where outside the stink belt. By the way I am a graduate of Penn State. They have air planes that fly out of conference to.  Remeber the conversation is about quality non-conference opponets. I know your going to the Penn State schedule to see who they play , so you can rebut. Go ahead…… I’ll wait. I know they play Akron, or Temple or a MACC team ocassionally. They have never palyed Charleston Southern. The real thing you should note is that they play a quality opponet out of conferece once in a while. Alabama next year 2nd game at BAMA.  Let me know when Florida schedules USC or Penn State or Ohio State the second game of the season. I’ll be snow skiing in hell.

Tee it up for Timmy on the ten.

by secoverrated on Feb 26, 2010 9:22 AM EST reply actions

Why does it have to be the second game?  Does FSU not count because they are at the end of the season.  And our second game this year is with USF, I would say they are a quality ooc opponet.  We play Miami in a few years in Miami, does that not count because it’s in the state of Florida?  Are they not as good because they are close to our campus?

by Daviegator on Feb 26, 2010 9:42 AM EST reply actions

Florida is a coward program that likes to beat up cupcakes.  You better hope there is no playoff or you will be exposed.

by SailorGabe on Feb 26, 2010 9:53 AM EST reply actions

I will admit USF is a quality opponet.  You have to admit it’s harder to win on road in anotherr region of the country. Floridas weather and climate is so consistent, that Jeremy Foley is frightened to play in another climate or another time zone.  It does make a difference. in September not as much in November Definately.  The spread wont work in Iowa in November when it’s freezing rain sideways and 32 degrees.  I have been to Florida field, the temperature and field conditions are the same every game. Yes it does rain there ocassionally. The surface is the same. I think the last time I have seen a warm weather team play North in November was Florida State. They played Notre DAme and lost a close on. They got the nod over Miami to play in the Natioonal Championship game in the Orange Bowl. I thought Miami should of got it . Notre Dame lost to B.C. that year.

secoverrated,I just used the term "their" teams so you would foolishly divulge your team. Now I can’t blame you for not listing it… there went your credibility.   OMG, you are a graduate of Penn St and you have the nads to critique someone else’s schedule?  That’s the most rediculous (sic) thing I have ever seen besides your spelling!  Thier (sic) schedule is the laughing stock of CFB.  Akron, Syracuse, Temple & Eastern Illinois!  Seriously, I would STFU if I were you. The artical (sic)… you did say you were a graduate, right?  Let me give you a little lesson in SOS, since you seem to be confused.  Check out this web-site, before I tell you where Penn St ranked:http://bcscentral.info/sos.htmlThese rankings are compiled by the BCS using computers & polls.  Check out the rankings, you will notice that Penn St was nowhere to be found.  Also, note that Florida was ranked @ #2 overall and @ #9 in SOS, EVEN playing a weak OOC team or two.  You do realize what that says about our Conference games, right?  Probably not, so I will tell you.  We play in the Strongest most Dominate Conference in CFB! That’s why our teams composite SOS’s are at the top of the rankings and the Big 10’s near the bottom.  Your Conference had it’s best showing in years, last year and was still average according to the Conference rankings.According to the NCAA:http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/2009/Internet/toughest%20schedule/fbs_9games_cumm.pdfPenn St’s schedule was ranked at number #48 that’s 42 spots behind Florida!  And that was only after you played a SEC team in the Bowl.  What does that say about your Conference strength?  I am sure you don’t have a clue. You may notice that 8 SEC teams were ranked in the Top 25 toughest schedules, including the #1, #2, #4 & #6.  And only Vanderbilt & Kentucky were ranked behind Penn St.FYI:  In 2008, Florida played Hawai’i (2008 Sugar Bowl participant), Florida St. & Miami.  Let’s compare that with Penn St playing Coastal Carolina, Oregon St, Syracuse, & Temple.Try doing a little research before you come back on here giving us your opinion because nobody wants to hear it.  The only thing worse than that… seems to be your spelling, Penn St grad.  Yeah right.Ask your boy SailorGabe, the facts all favor the SEC and I can quote them to  you verbatim.  If you are confused any further let me know, I can clear it up for you.

Sailorgabe – Yes, Florida lost to Ole Miss, and still went to and won the national championship game.  Why?  Because of the strenth of the SEC.  Enough said.

Secoverated – University of Arkansas.  Just to fill you in, it’s a team from the SEC that plays West of the Mississippi.  Look it up.

I never said SEC teams didnt play west of the Missippi river, I know they do, I said Florida never has in Regular season..  As for you Flower House, Do your research and I’ll give you over the weekend, It’ll be your home work. We all know PennState played Oregon two years ago at Oregon. List all those Florida quality west of the Mississippi games. As for you Josie Wales, shut up or I’ll whip you with a knotted plow line.  You guys go off subject everytime you lose the debate. Remember it’s all about Florida’s road schedule.  I was wondering why it took you so long to reply, you did some work with all your links and everything like I thought you wold. The Florist busness must be slow this morning. I realize Florida does play in the SEC , we are all tired of hearing how the SEC is the strongest. Dont give me your computer ranking crap.  I chose the screen name Secoverrated because they are.  Look at last year s polls. Ole Miss #6 in the beginning of the year, Georgia, #8 in the beginning of the year, that s why The polls suck.  They over rank the media darlings and if your lucky enough to have the overranked teams on your schedule you get a boost in the polls.  For your info Penn State finished the season ranked highr than they were in the beginning opf the year. Florida did not they Finished #2 they started the season ranked #1.  They only played 2 top 20 teams all year. Oh excuse me they played Cinncinatti in the Sugar thats 3. Alabama finished ranked higher than they started in the preseason. Thats the only team.   Im out  see you losers Monday.

by secoverrated on Feb 26, 2010 11:42 AM EST reply actions

Secoverrated – Do some research before you start spewing nonsense.  I’m going to try to make this as clear as possible for you.  Florida played Arkansas on Ocotber 4th, 2008.  The game was played in Fayetteville, Arkansas.  Fayetteville, Arkansas is West of the Mississippi River.  Arkansas plays in the Southeastern Conference (aka the SEC).  Florida plays SEC opponents during the "regular season".  Now, using that thing above your shoulders, you should be able to deduct that Florida played an opponent West of the Mississippi river in 2008.  Florida then played Arkansas in 2009 setting up the "home and home" you tried to refer to previously.

secoverrated,This is like shooting fish in a barrel! "We all know PennState played Oregon two years ago at Oregon." – secoverratedYour are even more stupid than I, previously thought (if that was possible).  You guys didn’t play Oregon two years ago, you moron.  Or maybe you couldn’t spell Oregon State… so you abbreviated!  And you played Oregon State at Home.  I did see where you scheduled Florida though, oh wait… that was Florida International!  You don’t even know your own teams schedule and you attempt to criticize Florida’s?  And what is with this "West of the Mississippi crap?  Do you guys get frequent flyer miles for traveling.  Florida, at least, plays Florida State and Miami (in state) while you guys refuse to schedule Pitt and play that PowerHouse, Temple!   And, I’m pretty sure that Florida St. and Miami have won more NC’s than Temple, Akron and Eastern Illinois.Go do some Homework, Tool and get your kids to help you spell with thier (sic) flash-cards!  You are even more stupid than SailorGabe, at least he knows SC’s schedule.  Penn St grad, my a$$.And for your comments about Pre-season polls… everyone knows they are meaningless but the season ending polls show that:Since 2000, the SEC has had more teams ranked int eh final USA Today Coaches Poll than any other Conference.  The SEC has had 43 teams ranked in the last nine final USA Today Coaches Polls, an average of almost 5 per season.  The Big 12 is second with 36 teams ranked  and the Big 10 nowhere to be found.  The SEC has led or tied for the lead in most teams ranked in the final USA Today Coaches Poll in seven of the last nine seasons.Again, proving that your moniker is Wrong, yet again.  Get back with me and I’ll help you with your Homework.

Alabama. No
Florida. No
Tenessee. No
LSU. No
Auburn. No

by SailorGabe on Feb 27, 2010 8:38 AM EST reply actions

I’m amazed at all this.  Every school is guilty of playing teams far below their abilities (Florida vs. Citadel and Florida International, Penn State vs. Akron, USC vs. San Jose State, Texas vs. UTEP, and Iowa vs. Arkansas State are prime examples).  Can we see USC/Fresno State, Penn State/Pitt, Texas/Houston, Iowa/Missouri, and Florida vs. any team in the BCS outside of the SEC?

I can see a "foundation game" on Week 1 or 2, but games on Week 11 or 12 is ridiculous.  That’s when the competition should be tough and in conference.

The author uses Navy, of all teams, as an example of a pay out?  Are you saying that Navy is a sacrificial lamb?  Navy/Ohio State was a very good game, and those who know couldn’t have been surprised that Navy gave ’em a game.

secoverrated and SailorGabe :  I read your posts and cringe. The former bastardizes grammar and spelling like a Pac-10 team bemoans the inherent truth that they are inferior. As for the latter, Sailor—this might help. "If" is the largest word in your vocabulary, literally and metaphorically.

‘If’ a Californian had wings they would not find themselves floundering in the Pacific. The Rose Bowl excluded SEC teams and later made the Big Ten a lock for the Rose Bowl because they grew weary of losing. Both Georgia Tech and Alabama have better winning percentages in the Rose Bowl Game than any Pac-10 or Big Ten team—and yes, Georgia Tech was in those days an SEC team.

Move the Rose Bowl to Michigan or Ohio and see how quickly your Bowl records decline. Move it to Tallahassee, and you will be lucky to win once a decade. Let Cal, UCLA, and USC play and beat Ole Miss, Tennessee, and LSU. Then we will talk about either of those teams playing the two CURRENT best SEC teams.

I love the envy the both of you marinate in like a rancid moose-steak with more maggots than potential palatable protein required to keep you in sufficient supply of active neurons; while wishing for miracles with your inherent inferiority—both in reality and in complex. There’s not enough Seroquel in Belleview to help either of you to stop incessantly whining about how your teams are winning in the ‘other 11 Dimensions of time required by The String Theory’.

Those voices you hear are not the fans of Pac 10 teams screaming of victory in the aforementioned dimensions. It’s called schizophrenia. Seek help or buy a thicker gauge foil for your hats. Neither will make you correct by default or even by personal decree or implication.

You’re clearly envious and paranoid. The latter can be treated with medications. The former will require another step on the ladder of evolutionary theory. Need a hammer and nails? An opposable thumb?

‘Mississippi’, and ‘grammar’, you illiterate twits.

Alabama played home and home with So Cal when they had a better coach—Robinson; back when the both of you were still wet-stains in the back-seat of your Father’s AMC Pacer. So Cal beat us in Alabama; we beat So Cal in the Rose Bowl when they were #1 in the nation; the score was 21-20.

That’s from memory and personal experience.

One of you claims to be 48 and a Penn State Grad, and the other has limp wrists, spells like a 7 year-old from the University of Grenada, and uses more pseudoephedrine than the manufacturer of Robitussin.

I’ll let you two bicker amongst yourselves as to which of the two is the dumbest. Frankly, there isn’t an SAT in Haiti with that low of a score. You’re Google intellects with delusions of the Ivy League. The SEC has 3 NC’s in a row, and 4 out of the last 5. You cannot change that by clicking your red stiletto heels together and making a wish during a Kansas tornado.

Now put your Barbie Dreamhouse away and go to bed. You have prepubescent Sunday School tomorrow. Maybe you can pray that Kiffin can walk upon NCAA water. He’s as wet behind the ears as you two are Siamese Twins with matching pink Apple computers with a porn-block on your high-speed Internet service.

The Rose Bowl has become a two-conference-inbred ‘has-been’, not unlike your two genetic maps from Ancestry/Deliverance.com. If life was equitable and he lived in another dimension, SailorBabe would play first banjo with the New York Philharmonic and be able to brush his teeth without first soaking them in kerosene.

"Missippi and grammer!" [SIC] You two make the Dumb and Dumber crowds appear to be smarter than the fans of Good Will Hunting and Dead Poet’s Society combined. Now remove your hand from ’secoverrated’s arse’ and see if he can speak without you moving your lips.

Let me know when a Pac-10 team is number two in the nation, and we might let you play against the SEC Champions for the National Championship. If the Pac-10 gets Texas, your chances of that happening increase exponentially compared to the likelihood of either of you realizing that the Pac 10 will be the Pac 11 without removing your Michael Jackson glove and your UCLA tighty-whiteys. That might in fact constitute Pac-10 & 1/2 considering your Fruit of the Looms tenant.
