Mike Richards fired a shot a few feet away from Ryan Miller. The USA goaltender kicked it away and three defenders swarmed around Richards, failing to see Jonathan Toews sneaking in along the goal line. Toews picked up the puck and buried it, unchallenged behind a sprawling Ryan Miller.
Canada leads 1-0 in the first period.
