Stephon Marbury made his long-awaited debut for Shanxi Zhongyu of the Chinese Basketball Association yesterday, and like most basketball-related things involving Stephon Marbury, it didn't end well for his team.
There is one difference, though. In this case, Marbury was chastised for not shooting. Marc Berman of the New York Post reports:
Marbury scored 15 points, had four rebounds, eight assists and four steals, but was criticized for passing up the game-winning shot against Dongguan Marco Polo. With his team trailing 102-101, Marbury dished the ball to another former NBA player, Maurice Taylor, who missed a 3-pointer that would have won the game.
Angry fans bombarded the comments section of China's Sina.com, one of the biggest sites in the country. One fan even wrote "Marbury was not in his usual form…for the last shot, he passed the ball to Taylor with only two seconds left. How could the ball make it in? If it were Kobe, he would have made the shot!” You read that right. A Chinese fan is telling Marbury he should be more selfish.
Here's the play, in case you were wondering.
For more on Marbury's debut, I recommend this fantastic piece by Deadspin's Anthony Tao, reporting from Taiyuan.
