In the movie The Express, West Virginia fans are portrayed as obnoxious, angry jerks who have no qualms with throwing trash at their opponents in the middle of a game. Mountaineer fans were furious over the portrayal, which in all fairness, did not happen in real life.
Still, after tonight's home game against rival Pitt, you really can't blame the makers of the The Express for making that leap.
West Virginia coach Bob Huggins grabbed a microphone and addressed the fans a short time later after several objects were thrown on the court, telling the crowd "That's stupid."
A few minutes later, as the officials were reviewing on the courtside TV a scuffle under the basket involving Pitt's Gary McGhee and two West Virginia players, Pittsburgh assistant coach Tom Herrion was hit with what appeared to be a coin under his right eye.
This is also on the heels of an AP article yesterday calling out West Virginia fans for their behavior all season long. While folks at The Smoking Musket discuss what to do about the escalation, you can't help but wonder what Mountaineer fans might do next. WVU hosts No. 2 Villanova on Monday in front of a nationally-televised audience. Folks will be tuning in as much to see what the crowd does as the game itself.
