Saints - Colts: Super Bowl XLIV Open Thread

[UPDATE]: For convenience of thread management, we've moved the discussion to the second quarter thread, located here. Continue the conversation at the new thread. [END UPDATE]

The big game is finally here. SB Nation would like to welcome all the members of our NFL blogs (and other sports) to our first Super Bowl open thread. We're asking fans from around the SB Nation universe to join together to watch the game and comment on the happenings, as they happen!

First off, we here at SB Nation will have people reporting live from the stadium. We're also going to be providing up-to-the-minute news, video, and offbeat commentary. Be sure to keep up with our StoryStream.

Also, our own Spencer Hall will be riffing on tonight's commercials. Stay tuned for a link.

Of course, our Saints community at Canal Street Chronicles and our Colts community at Stampede Blue will be participating in their own threads. But for the rest of us, those without a dog in the race, we can get together here and gab about the game until our hearts are content. Don't forget the commercials, they're fair game, too.

Welcome, SB Nation community, to our Super Bowl open thread.

Please Note: To have the comments auto-refresh, click the checkbox just above where the first comment begins.

I'm throwing in with the Saints

That city took a hit, but has rebounded. This would be a nice capper. Sorry Colts fans, but I’m sure you don’t care who we root for!

Gotta hang with you on this one, Dave

HC Sean Payton has spoken highly of Belichick and his organization. Plus, as you mentioned, everything Nawlins has gone through.

So agree with you, Dave. So excited for NO being in their first big show. I’ll be rooting for them early, often, and LOUD!

I'm not sure who I'm rooting for

The Saints are the sentimental choice, but I enjoy what both team’s bring to the football field. I’m just hoping for a good game. We’ve had two straight entertaining Super Bowls, so let’s hope for a third one.

How can you not unless you’re from Indy? I mean what city needs a huge celebration in the US more than any other. Peyton already has his ring.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Feb 7, 2010 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

agreed

Saints have never been to a SB. Ill probably cheer for them but would be fine if Indy wins.

by Jeremy Mauss on Feb 7, 2010 3:31 PM EST up reply actions

How could you not?

Easy… “Who Dat?”

“Who Dat?” is why I’m rooting for the Colts today.

That plus Sean Payton is overly smug and there’s few players I dislike more than Jeremy Shockey.

by Jason Brewer on Feb 7, 2010 3:41 PM EST up reply actions

Still the city was pretty much destroyed

In one of the worst natural disasters in American history. Their home stadium was used as a camp for people who were struggling to live.

I can overlook a smug coach and an a-hole like Shockey if it’s going to bring big joy to a city that has never experienced a pro sports title and football team has been awful for years and years.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Feb 7, 2010 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

My pity for the disaster that happened to the city isn’t enough to overcome my dislike for those guys and doesn’t make “Who Dat?” any less stupid.

I agree with JasonB. Go Colts!

speaking of commercials

I went to my brothers house a few years ago and he was coming in from out of town later so I waited to watch the game on the TivO and just blast through the game.

However his wife was watching and insisted on watching the commercials. Lets just say that sucked because we did not start watching the game till 8pm so instead of being a 2 and a half hour watch it was near four hours since she HAD to watch the commercials.

ESPN declaring Saints winner

An inadvertent — or was it — post was published on ESPN:

“After completing the best season in New Orleans Saints history, Drew Brees has finally won his first Super Bowl,” the item reads. “Brees’ lone Super Bowl victory puts him on an eclectic list of starting quarterbacks with one title to their names.”

FACT

Jim Halpert: Question. What kind of bear is best?
Dwight Schrute: That’s a ridiculous question.
Jim Halpert: False. Black bear.
Dwight Schrute: That’s debatable. There are basically two schools of thought—
Jim Halpert: Fact. Bears eat beets. Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.
Dwight Schrute: Bears do not… What is going on?! What are you doing?!

FACT! Drew Brees will win this game.

Hopefully.

Unrelated, but I thought this was interesting.

ESPN is running some kind of pseudo-personal workouts right now. A couple minutes ago they had the wide recievers (Williams, Gilyard, Bryant and someone else) going through the motions. Now it’s QBs— Snead and LeFevour are up now.

Yup, I'm the nut who believes Mark Loretta is a possible future Hall of Famer.
