This isn't about Amare Stoudemire, the Suns, or that ridiculous dunk from yesterday's game.
We need to talk about Richard Jefferson. Think back to when he was brought in this offseason. People were speaking in reverential tones about his athleticism, how the Spurs were going to be scary on the perimeter, and how the whole league had better gear up for another title run from those pesky San Antonio Spurs.
And then they started actually playing games and the whole league realized that Richard Jefferson has lost a step (or eight) over the past few years. So yesterday was quite a moment, with Jefferson's age and incompetence frozen in one, spectacularly embarrassing facial.
One sad, irreversible moment, when everybody realizes that a someone's well past his prime, and probably better off just retiring on the spot. Like The Who at the Super Bowl. Like whenever Jason Kidd plays defense. Like everyone in the movie Righteous Kill. And most of all, like last night's terribawful debut of Jerry Seinfeld's The Marriage Ref.
That was Richard Jefferson on Sunday. Just like NBC, the Spurs were looking for a savior, and they got Richard Jefferson. So where does that leave San Antonio's title chances? Marriage Ref levels of hopelessness.

I could have sworn that
the Spurs won the game and that Jefferson had 20 points on just 11 shots. I guess one play means more than the other 199.
And if you’re suggesting that Jason Kidd just retire on the spot too, have you watched the Mavs lately?

So you think Jefferson's been a succesful addition?
You think the Spurs are going to contend? I don’t think it’s controversial to say that’s Jefferson’s a shell of his former self, and the Spurs are fading along with him.
Also, wasn’t suggesting Kidd reitre, but he clearly reitred on the defensive end a few years ago. (And it was also just a joke.)

Also of note
Jefferson’s averaging 12 ppg and 4 rebounds.
He’s also making $29 million for this year and next.
In this case, one play was more symbolic than the other 199.
